Tennessee has 28 scholarships for this class. I truly believe that with 9 wins and some coming in a dominating fashion and closer than expected losses to UF and Alabama, that TN will have to tell some guys who are committed to think about some other options.
Looking at all the uncommitted out there right now is a kid in the candy store and it is really good to be on so many kids list still. After we start the season I think we improve in mind of many kids, and lots of other programs decline (Miami, ND, UCLA).
I want to look by position and say who I think may have to move.
RB: I think we may get Dyer. If we do not I think we will get Palardy's Italian sounding teammate whose name I am too lazy to look up right now. Giovanni Bernard? Anyway I think we are graduating Hardesty and we will give out 1 scholarship here. No way that Seastrunk and Dyer both want to come, and I think if Dyer and Storm Johnson both wanted to come, we would just take Dyer.
FB: Channing Fugate. His Rivals rank sucks, but that is because they view the entire state of Kentucky as not good at football. He is the third best prospect in the state to them and yet is a 3 star. Had a great start to his year: Breathitt County star, and University of Tennessee committ, Channing Fugate ran the ball 13 times, for 224 yards and five touchdowns Friday night, in a 58-24 victory over Mercer County.
QB:
Quit dreaming, Phillip Sims is not switching his commitment (even though Askew will not stop working him). We have no depth here because Coleman left but I believe we are not having to count Lamaison in this class because he is already there. I think we will take Bray and that might be it. We also are still talking to Baty. Many believe that if the staff really wants him we could still get Brunetti away from WVU, but at this point I think that would mean that we failed to get Bray.
OL:
Zach Fulton, very close relationship with the coaches and was considered the best looking OL in camps where he played with higher ranked players. Coaches love his potential and this 3 star is not going anywhere as a commit and may shoot up the rankings.
Jose Jose, we do not want to burn any bridges in Miami. He is real big, he is not the most explosive.
Marques Pair. I would say that if I had to guess on the guy who might end up getting walked back if push came to shove it would be this young man. He is listed as the 22nd best recruit in SC and we have guys on the board who we would be delighted to have.
Who do we want on the OL (probably our biggest position of need)? Damien Robinson, James Stone, Arie Kouandjio (and little brother next year maybe) and current Alabama commit JaWuan James.
K: Michael Palardy. The lowest ranked kid on the board who there is no way we do anything but adore the rest of the way. He is an absolute beast of a kicker and could be a gamechanger under Neyland's maxims.
WR:
Markeith Ambles and Matt Milton are two 4 stars with upside. They could each end up being better than Prater. Demarco Cobbs may complete this group, but Meline may be interested still as well. We only take 4 stars at this point at this position IMO and no changes will be made. Kenny Stills and Ted Meline are also very real possibilities. Interestingly Trovon Reid, Shakim Phillips and Joshua Reese are all technically still possible at this point. I do not expect any of them, but I do expect TN to develop a great reputation amongst this class of WR after we play Nu'Keese and Teague a ton.
TE:
Delvin Jones and we are done. This is helped by Mosely being here as well. Welcome Jamal, at UT we do not mind white women dating our football players.
DT:
John Brown was a 5 star DT coming out of HS and then he had to go the JUCO route. The staff loves him.
Pat Harris chose us over Utah and Utah State...He is called a beast by some, but I do not think he is as highly coveted by other schools as many of the guys on our board at DT. I do think they are stronger on him than on
Risean Broussard. He never got the LSU offer and some are nervous that if he does he may bolt. Having him in purple and gold may work out okay. "Idiot! Crazy! Know nothing!" well that is because of the following...
Who else are we in the running for?
George Uko I think is coming: George Uko - Yahoo! Sports
He is an absolute stud. He is taking an official in October.
Kelcy Quarles:
Kelcy Quarles - Yahoo! Sports
He committed a very long time ago (11/08) to the Gamecocks and after this season I think he may start feeling better about us. He is probably coming to visit very soon...
and Todd Chandler
Todd Chandler - Yahoo! Sports
out of Miami who may want to be coached by Warren Sapp's coach instead of staying home and playing for a new coach (Miami may well have a firing after this season)
DE
Jacques Smith may be called the cornerstone of the class even if he ends up as a cornerstone. This guy has been recruiting for the Vols, he is a freakish athlete and a great kid.
J.C. Copeland a 4 star and not going anywhere.
We are also in it for
Ego Ferguson J.R. Ferguson - Yahoo! Sports who is coming out of Hargrave, has friends here, has visited here and likes us and
Ronald Powell who is a 5 star DE and who most say will choose between USC and UF. We are running third even though we offered first, but I think if we can get him out here we may well end up with him.
Harris, Broussard etc. What if we end up with an awesome season and Uko and Chandler want to come?
If either of them came it would be the most talented DE group at school since Sean Ellis and Leonard Little. TN has some pretty good tradition as well with Reggie White.
LB is where I think things could change maybe more than anywhere else. Our starting LB is smaller than me! That is not to mock the kid, it is to point out that we have an all NFL staff but we do not have an Al Wilson, a Raynoch Thompson or an Eric Westmoreland.
We are currently looking at this class:
JC player Bruce Irvin who is a grown man coming into the OLB spot who is looking so good that USC is reportedly sniffing around (according to his JC's main citizen reporter)
3 star Michael Taylor who was courted by Miami, GT, VT and most of the SEC LSU, Georgia, Bama but not Florida
and 3 star Ralph Williams whose offer list included Michigan, FSU and Miami but who is 77th at his position according to Rivals.
Lance Thompson pulled Taylor out of Atlanta (an area we need to keep pulling from) and Ralph Williams is a Miami guy who Gran brought. Look at the talent at the position considering us still:
Rivals.com Prospect Rankings
Jeff Luc and C.J. Mosley.
Mosley is an Alabama boy, 8th best prospect in the state to Rivals who has us alone as an SEC school in his top 5. C.J. Mosley - Yahoo! Sports
Jeff Luc is the player many of us recruiting junkies dream of. Jeff Luc - Yahoo! Sports We have to battle UF, and OSU and USC but most people seem to think he is a Seminole.
We are also still in it for Victor Burnett from CA who is coming for a visit.
I would love to get Khairi Fortt, Christian Jones or LaDarius Owens but I think we get none of them. We do get Josh Shirley though from CA and that is a great get! Travis Williams is also possible.
Safety:
Our new Eric Berry is Dietrich Riley from CA. Our new Eric Berry will probably be no one, because he is superman, but Riley is a very talented player and back there with JJ they will have sick athleticism comparable to Berry and Morley with two brains instead of one.
DB:
It would be great to pull Milliner away like Janzen Jackson but no one at Alabama is getting fired and I do not see it happening. Could we get Lamarcus Joyner? Yes and we could get Luc, but it is much much more likely they both end up at FSU.
If we get a visit from Joshua Shaw, we may get him, which would be unreal in terms of CA talent coming east this year. John Fulton is a SC boy interested in us but strong lean to play for Spurrier. If they suck this year and Garcia melts down again, I think we could get him.
Wright to USC, Mitchell to FSU, but we are in the running. Cody Riggs is Geralds little bro, and we could possibly maybe get him but I think he is headed to UF.
If we get none of these guys we may end up with Hurd, or Trimble.
So what would happen if we had a final 15 that looked like:
James Stone
Damien Robinson
Arie Kouandjio
JaWuan James
Dietrich Riley
DeMarco Cobbs
Joshua Shaw
Josh Shirley
Jeff Luc
Ronald Powell
Ego Ferguson
Bray
Dyer
Uko
Quarles or Chandler
You would see Ralph Williams to Miami as a switch, Marques Pair to SC as a switch and Risean Broussard to LSU as a switch without really any hard feelings.
TN would also if that fantasy occurred, have the number 1 class, surpassing Texas.
