Fulmer was the luckiest SOB in America in 1998.

Against Syracuse Jeff Hall hit a field goal with time expiring for the win.

Florida misses a FG in ot to give TN the win.

Then the famous fumble by Stoerner when AR was trying to run the clock out for a win.

A great year... 3 big breaks in those games but most championship teams gets a few breaks during the year. 1998 was the Fulmer and TN year to get the breaks.

That was a WAR folks. First time I've seen it in 15 years, and still can't believe Tenn won..... I took some notes while watching...

First half: our offense struggled... Travis Stephens had a fumble deep in Tenn territory, Ark then drove in for a score. Ark 7-0. Stoerner looks like the 2nd coming of Heath Shuler. Ark goes up 21-3, then Peerless catches a TD just before half. Tenn back in the game 21-10.

3rdQtr: Tenn Defense steps up, and Travis Henry pretty much takes over. After an Ark FG, Travis sets up a Tee Martin end run for a TD, 24-17 Ark. Tenn then goes on another long drive behind Henry's running. Tee has two key runs for first downs. First down on the 5, Tee gets sacked, incomplete pass, screen play nets 5 yds, 4th and goal from the 3. FG Tenn. 24-20 Ark to the 4thQtr.

4th: Stoerner gets hot again, goes on a long drive, two big throws to Lucas to the 15. Al Wilson gets a big sack, forces Ark FG attempt-- BLOCKED by Al Wilson! Deon Grant recovers runs about 40 yds to the Ark 35. Tenn is stopped by Ark, punt to the 2yd line. Chickova has a big 30yd run, Ark out of trouble. Al Wilson pulls groin, and has to sit out. Drive stalls, Ark punts - snaps SAILS over punter's head, Ark takes SAFETY after punter kicks ball out of EZ. 24-22 Ark. (We should've had ball at the 20yd line, refs missed that call).

Tenn returns punt after safety to midfield, offense stutters, 4th-10 pass incomplete. Ark has ball midfield. 1:48 left, 2nd down, Stoerner bootleg left, STOERNER FUMBLE!!! Tenn at the 42. Travis to the 28. Travis to the 13. Travis to the 2! 1:07 left. Half the crowd left, now trying to get back in. Henry to the 1. Tick-tock. Henry DIVES OVER, TD-TENN at 0:28 left. Tenn 28-24, takes a knee on the EP. Wild victory!

Stoerner will always be my favorite arky player. A close second is Matt Jones doing cocaine in his car.

You can spend the rest of your life whining about it but YOU ARE WHAT YOUR RECORD SAYS YOU ARE and Tennessee coached by Phil Fulmer was UNDEFEATED and the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS in 1998.

Great teams win close games and that was a great team. Neither Syracuse, Florida, Arkansas, nor Florida State (even if Weinke had played) was going to beat that Volunteer team.

I don’t categorically know whether the rule governing this particular play was identical in 1998 or not, but Rule 9, Section 4, Article 4 currently states that “A player shall not kick a loose ball, a forward pass or a ball being held for a place kick by an opponent. These illegal acts do not change the status of the loose ball or forward pass; but if the player holding the ball for a place kick loses possession during a scrimmage down, it is a fumble and a loose ball; if during a free kick, the ball remains dead (A.R. 8-7-2-IV and A. R. 9-4-1-XI).

PENALTY—10 yards, plus loss of down for fouls by Team A if the loss of down is not in conflict with other rules [S31 and S9] (Exception: No loss of down if the foul occurs when a legal scrimmage kick is beyond the neutral zone).”

If I interpret that rule correctly, the Arkansas punter made illegal contact, with approximately 3:00 left in the 4th qtr., at or slightly inside the Arkansas 10 on 4th down (fast forward to 1:37:35 mark of 1998 Arkansas vs. Tennessee (CBS Sports) - YouTube). The ensuing penalty should have resulted in Tennessee’s possession at or inside the Arkansas 5-yd. line. As we all remember, a safety was, instead, awarded to Tennessee and an Arkansas free kick ensued. Had the proper penalty been enforced, which, as best I recall, the SEC Commissioner’s Office later admitted that the officials erred in failing to do so, it is reasonably safe to say that we would have then scored a touchdown, rather than having to wait for the “Stoerner stumble and fumble” to set up Travis Henry’s winning score.

Bottom Line: If the officials did their job properly, there is no need for a “miraculous Stoerner fumble” to make our victory possible.

Bottom line: Tennesee ended that game on a 25-3 run and y'all should quit trying to apologize or rationalize a WIN by the national champions.

Arkansas came in undefeated so you had to expect a tough game. It was. However, the Razorbacks knew the games last at least 60 minutes and they couldn't finish it. The Vols did.

I wish Arkansas wouldn't have choked the next weekend vs Miss State so the Vols could have played them again in Atlanta. That one would not have been close.

I almost certain you are correct. Because the ball was at the 10 yard line when he kicked it out of the endzone. That's where the illegal kick occurred which is where the flag should have been thrown.

UT would have accepted the penalty at the spot of the foul (instead of the safety) which would have put the ball at the Ark 5.

Nice detective work! :detective:

Any win by CPF must be rationalized and apologized by VN.

You could not have possibly misinterpreted the intent of my post more completely. I submitted this data in direct opposition to the train of thought against which you were railing.

Nick Saban got pretty lucky last year, too. Won in the final seconds against LSU, UGA is stopped a mere few feet away from a touchdown, they lose to Texas A&M, yet they still win the BCS title. Sounds pretty lucky.
