It always annoys me when people say "all Arkansas had to do was run out the clock." As the video clearly demonstrates, it was 2nd and 12 with 1:47 left. Even though TN had no timeouts, Arkansas still needed a first down to run out the clock and they were 12 yards away from that. That's why Stoerner was dropping back to pass on that play. Even if Arkansas had just run the ball on 2nd and 3rd down, they would have had to punt it back to us on 4th down and there would have been around 45-55 seconds left (remember these were the days of the :25 play clock). We would have had even more time if they had tried a pass on 2nd or 3rd down and it had fallen incomplete. Either way, that's enough time to go down the field and get in field goal range (which was all we needed; we were only down by 2).
Of course, the fumble was incredible luck and made everything easier, but it's not like the game was over if he didn't fumble. There was still a decent chance for UT to win it as long as Arkansas didn't get the first down, and that's why Nutt had his guy dropping back to pass.
