There have been arguments for and against stars, yet everything I have researched tonight leads me to believe that you not only need that elite talent, but elite coaching as well. I have also researched to the point that Alabama had 7 draft picks in this year's draft, and none of those were 5* players, yet Florida had 9 draft picks with 3 of those being 5* players and lost to Alabama in the SECCG. Florida also has 2 NCs since 2005, so they are no slouch either.

So, either which way it goes, we are going to have to see in about 3 years whether or not Dooley's coaching staff is going to be a "elite" type staff, that can not only pull in the talent, but even more importantly, coach the players up. With a little patience and a little luck, we can get there, but it's not going to be easy at all. I just hope that the majority of Vol Fans now appreciate the success we enjoyed and understand that we aren't always going to suck from here on out and can produce a little positivity about the future.

So, yes stars DO matter in the end, but more so evaluating the 3*/4* guys that will make your team complete and competitive.

Not to bust your thread Eric, but stars don't matter if the players don't stay. We've had so many 4 and 5 star guys leave in the past 5 years, I believe thats a major contributor to our recent troubles too.

Attrition is a major problem yes, but the coaching factor with that attrition has been an even bigger issue. Stability will go a long way in fixing both.

We've also had a fair share of our so called "star recruits" that have been busts.....people get too caught up in the star ratings.....yes they do matter to some degree, just not as much as some people put stock into

:good!: I think I've been guilty of taking it for granted in the past.

You don"t have to look any further back than Golden Boy's class to see that lol. His class is top 15 now at best, maybe closer to top 20 !

In my research, I can tell you that the top players from the 3*s and up, is KEY to winning at a high level. Of course, it would be nice to always get 4*s and above, but realistically, right now that's not going to happen. So taking the players that will be solid and contribute to the rotation, while sprinkling in that elite type talent as well is a good starting point. There were only 4 5*s drafted from the Top 5 in the final BCS poll, and Florida had 3 of those.

I think a lot of our fans have the entitlement mentality because of it honestly. College football is very dynamic though, and every program has it's down time. Look at Michigan over the past 50 years, then look at them the last 3.

Star rankings are hit and miss too. Montori Hughes was a 2 star prospect out of high school.

If we remove Brown, Richardson, Myles, Edwards, and whoever else we lost from the 2009 class, we wouldn't be in the top 50, let alone the top 20. The class was ranked around 15 before the addition of Brown himself.

The attrition has killed us know, but it's not what got us to this position. Because of all the coaching changes is were all of the players dropping off has hurt us.

I have no problem with us having 3* recruits....unfortunately a lot of our "fans" do....I don't see it being that big of an issue as some are making it out to be....I understand that having high 4* and 5* recruits are necessary but not the be all end all

Good Point! We can say things are bad right now, but at least they're not as bad as they are at Michigan!

WE have proven over the years that we are not Michigan......nor would we want to be.
They are the first media darling of the TV era. ND got a TV spot and the Media had to invent a "Clubber Lang" to go along with it. Michigan is a joke and just because they out performed ND and OU doesn't mean they even had a chance in the SEC. Didn't we hang 50+ on them the last time we played ?

While I don't disagree that each service has their blunders, they pretty much group the Top 150-250 guys correctly, just some over achieve and some under achieve according to my research. Stars are never going to be perfect, mainly because of the work ethic, grades, and injury factors. I can tell you that the majority of 4*/5* talent are taken in the first 4 rounds of the NFL draft.

the only thing more unproven than the players coming in are the coaches that brought them here.

I think more accurately, it should be getting as many can't miss guys as you can, and coaching up the rest. If a service misses a can't miss guy, you get him at a value with no other teams to compete with. Doesn't happen often though.

Could it not also be an error in scouting?

Which is why stars really don't matter right now, until we can see if this staff can even coach them up in 4 years. The progress made by prospects are what the elite prospects see, so you land more guys the better people progress in your system. So, the elite guys come after you establish yourselves as coaches, then come the wins. So, you need both.

Sure, coaches are better at scouting than the services, but for the most part, the services are pretty accurate. Most of them hit on 80-85% of all the prospects they rank. They just can't take into effect how the prospect gets coached up in the end.

To be honest, I think that they should do a re-ranking of like the Top 150 or so after all of the prospects have completed their eligibility for that respective class. Then, we would see how close they were. Right now though, they are doing well, but not perfect.

I agree they are fairly accurate, however there are COUNTLESS high school prospects. It is nearly impossible to give them all a fair and accurate analysis.

We both agree on your bolded statement, and I believe most posters on here would too. That is were I don't understand all of this negativity about our current class. If we in fact do believe the coaches are better at evaluating talent than websites, then why is everyone acting as if we have a horrible class?

There is also a ton of politics in recruiting services. The longer a kid stays uncommitted, usually his ranking increases. For example, many thought Trent Richardson was the best running back in the 09 class, but because Bryce stayed uncommitted for so long his stock shot up higher because he was still on the table, where Richardson committed months before NSD.

Bottom line, I trust the coaches and they're ability to evaluate talent. We don't have to look far for evidence Dooley can do well. He was recruiting coordinator for an LSU team which won a National Title(2003), and recruited many on the 2007 team, who also won a national title.

I say lets get ready for football and get behind the coaches and players and stop trying to be recruiting experts and think you know more than the coaches.I cant believe most people on this site wasnt hired to recruit for Tn as much as most act like they know or in the know.
If DD went out and got 4 5* players and they ended up being a bust then most would complain that he cant evaluate recruits.Either way DD loses.

What the hell are you talking about? You realize Michigan is just as good (or maybe even better) program than UT? My God, what an ignorant, ignorant post. You realize they have been more successful over the last ten years than UT? Or do you just spew ignorance no matter what?

Stars don't matter as much as the offer list. But it's not a mistake that the top five programs over the last ten years (OU, UF, Texas, OSU, USC) are mostly always in the top 10 in recruiting rankings.

Michigan is 8-16 over the past 2 seasons, we're 12-13. Michigan is in a worst state than we are currently, and sadly they've only had one coach. We've had 3. Even an unbiased fan would rather be Tennessee right now instead of Michigan.
