Whether we older folks recognize it or not, the definition of "social" in our culture has changed dramatically in the past decade. Technology has given us the ability to connect with others in new ways, and those connections can be as beneficial (or not) as we choose to make them. While social media can't/shouldn't replace face-to-face time, they can add to existing relationships or provide relationships where face-to-face time is impossible or impractical.
As already mentioned, you choose who and how much to interact. If you are following laundry lists and breakfast menus, you have no one to blame but yourself. If you don't know the intent of technology, don't blame the technology. If you don't know how to use technology, don't blame the technology.
