So how do waaaaaaay less talented teams compete with us, yet we can't compete with teams more talented than us?
That's kind of a generalization. AP or WKY didn't compete with us.
And I thought we competed against Florida. We had the ball deep in their territory late in the game with a chance to cut the deficit to seven; against a defense that many regarded as one of the best in the country.
That's just my perspective though.

This. Don't the star rankings intend to reflect how long before a player is able to contribute on the college level, or something like that?
A team full of 3 star fifth-year seniors is going to be in much better shape than a team forced to play a lot of true freshman while lacking quality depth.
Here is the SEC east broken down by star ratings AFTER the spring game this year.
UT currently has 23 four star players on the roster, updated do to the loss of Mo Couch. Of the 23 on the roster, 6 are seniors which will leave a total of 17 on the roster. As of right now, Tennessee has 11 four star players and 1 five star player committed. If UT holds serve and keeps them all, that will mean that UT will have 29 four star or higher players on the roster for 2014. That will be a net gain of 6 four star or higher players as compared to the 2013 roster which will make a big difference in terms of depth. UT will need another top 10 class of legitimate SEC caliber players in 2015 to get the UT roster up to consistent SEC play imo.
S Alabama is no where near as talented as we are, just like we are not even close to bama. When we play the top half of the SEC talent is a fair argument, when we play a team that started in like 2009 who has a roster full do 2* and non rated player it's not.
