A&M (not) hiring Mark Stoops

Works for me. Besides, Day will need a landing spot after OSU runs him off after yesterday's loss.
Day is something like 56-7 at Ohio State. They will sacrifice some assistants, perhaps, because of the Michigan losses, but Day was picked and trained by Urban Meyer for that job.

I'm not sure there's anyone they could replace Ryan Day with who wouldn't also go 56-7 +/- maybe 1 or 2 games.

They'll be pissy. They'll run their mouths about canning him. They'll be even more obnoxious than normal for Ohio State, but they aren't stupid. They can't get anyone better than Ryan Day and they know it.

Im not sure A&M can get anyone better than Jimbo at this point

Fan bases seem to think there is a large pool of coaches guaranteed to get them 10+ wins a season and if they just get that magical coach, everything will be perfect.
The fact is that, since there is no tie anymore, every win for one coach is a loss for another coach. Math ensures that the overall average coaching record is 0.500 every season.
There are maybe 10 absolutely incredible coaches that can deliver what fans expect on a consistent basis and they are being fought over by over 100 teams. For every Saban or Smart there are dozens of Joe Average coaches.
Not saying teams shouldn’t keep pursuing excellence; but I am saying that disappointment is statistically MUCH more likely that satisfaction.
That said, I am glad we got the coach we have right now

The other part of that is that coaching is a career. Some folks think it's a "calling" or "mission" that someone has and everyone who does it wants the #1 spot or nothing.

Many people who coach find their level ISN'T the top of the profession and they're fine with having a fulfilling coaching career without that. David Cutcliffe comes to mind quickly. Great coach. Good guy. He was never in danger of being "too driven" to be a top 10 coach. Still, a dang good coach who had a good career and was helpful to the development of several players.

It’s not cushy when you’re losing to Michigan every year
Reminding me how chippy we were losing to UF every year when we had National Championship caliber teams.
Loved those seasons and knowing we were winning against Bama and UGA. Thought we were winning against UF, but they had our coaches' numbers.

9 wins a year weren't enough for Nebraska so they fired Frank Solich. Then they fell off a cliff. Everyone wants to be what Alabama has been and Georgia is right now. Only a handful ever get there. A&M isn't one of them and most likely won't ever be because their big money donors and regents won't stay out of the way. It's glorious to watch.

and Bo Pelini. He only won 9 games per year.
That was the beginning of their tailspin. Coaching hires can burn it all to the ground.

The fact no one over there mentions Heupel, speaks volumes about how he is viewed outside our echo chamber.
Not sure what you are implying but we are lucky to have Heupel. A&M will not hire someone better than him.

“According to TexAgs, Stoops had begun telling people in Lexington he was leaving. Back in College Station, a deal had been set in place, but A&M's Board of Regents had not approved the contract to make him the 31st head coach in program history.

Following the report, an uprising began among A&M fans via social media and A&M fan websites. The board became aware of the backlash and decided to nix the deal at the final hour.”

I’m sure we will soon see feigned outrage from people like Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel about fan outrage blocking a hire.

So I'm curious...do you get the feel that they wanted Stoops, felt like it was a curve ball, they are shocked he was high on the list, etc?
According to their forum, the AD lied to the board and then went behind the boards back to try and hire Stoops. The fans were pissed he would try that after he said a 8-4 coach isn't who we will hire. Lol

The AD at TAMU probably now knows Stoops or someone like him is the best they will get.

Stoops is a good coach. He’s taken Kentucky as high as Kentucky can go. If he takes A&M as high as they can go there will be a lot of people eating crow.

One last blurb about Stoops from me.

TX A&M 1 10-win season in 12 years (11 actually during the Manziel season)
Mark Stoops 2x 10-win seasons in 11 years
Ha!
I haven't gone looking but my gut tells me KY hasn't stressed their Strength Of Schedule much in the last decade or so. I don't think they're GA weak but I don't think they've tried to "step on to the national stage" via scheduling.

They just beat a top 10 team. But yes, the rest of the schedule is pretty weak.
