On today's broadcast (The Tony Basilio Show ), Basilio ranked candidates on the big board in the following fashion:

1. Al Golden: Absolute homerun hire here. Football Pearl!
2. Gary Patterson: Fulmeresque to the core! Wins..
3. Charlie Strong: Just about everybody wins @ L-Ville
4. Jimbo Fisher: Good, solid coach and recruiter.
5. Butch Davis: The guy cheats. Came close in Kiffin yr.
6. Bobby Petrino: Would sell tix. Can he win east?
7. David Cutcliffe: Solid coach! National recruiter?

Please forgive my ignorance when it comes to this guy, but what is there in Al Golden's resume that qualifies as an "absolute homerun hire"?

Basilio has always been nuts, but that list is crazy even by his low standards.

I would take Patterson, Strong or Fisher. But the other four....no thanks!

Al Golden...I just dont see it.

Will someone please explain to me the appeal of Al Golden? Hes had two winning seasons in his career. How does that compare to Pearl (who was winning championships and beating top ranked teams before he came to UT)?

Also, any list that has Cutcliffe in the top ten needs to be thrown out.

To my way of thinking, an absolute "homerun hire" = someone who has enjoyed sustained longterm success on a national level. Based on those criteria, you are talking about Patterson and Petrino, although Petrino is far too much of a loose cannon to entrust the proverbial "keys to the kingdom."

Al Golden? A home run hire?! Gimme a break. As for the comment that everyone wins at Louisville...Yeah Petrino won there but who else has won consistently there? Kragthorpe sure did do a great job! Lol.

He made a competitor out of one of the worst programs in America.

This is correct. Combine that with the fact that Basillio is a Philly guy and you get the reason why he is always hyping Golden who I agree isn't the kind of homerun hire that will excite the fanbase but he's a solid coach

If you're speaking of Temple, please tell me what conference they are in again?

Big East, but seeing as how they were kicked out of that conference early last decade and forced to join the MAC, I'd say the fact that Golden took the reins, took them to their first bowl game in about 40 years, and got them competitive enough that they were let back into the conference is pretty impressive

He had two good seasons (after many bad ones). He didn't beat anybody of note. How is that so remarkable? Dykes is doing more at La Tech and in less time.

Coming to the conclusion Basilios got brain damage...Al Golden hardly qualifies as a homerun hire...Hell he isn't even a bunt single of a hire...My personal top 3 excluding Gruden who won't come but still holding out hope...Yeah I know it won't happen so bite me but my realistic 3 are...Davis, Patterson and Petrino...Those 3 can get us to the next level again..All 3 could build a killing machine and would have us competing for east titles in no time.

Basilio gets his coaches that he gets fixated on. It used to be Brian Kelly(would have been great) for football and now Golden. In bball, he was always high on Martelli and kept throwing his name out when UT had bball opening. I used to be high on Golden but that has worn off for the most part

I'm not arguing that Golden should be at the top of the list, but Temple was pretty horrendous a few years ago.

Yeah, I know. But Golden reminds me too much of Dooley. Why get a mid major coach with a losing record, when there are plenty out there with winning records? (and yeah, I know, Golden isn't a mid major coach anymore, but his mediocre work at Miami can't be any reason to give him this job)

Yep. A 5-5 record at Miami this year, given the recruiting treasuretrove that south Florida provides, doesn't inspire confidence in me.

Thank you! I questioned Al Golden the other day in a thread...seems like a Dooley-esque coach, imo...

Temple has a worse all-time record than Eastern Michigan, Tulane, and New Mexico. Al Golden took them to two straight 8+ win seasons, their first consecutive winning seasons in 30+ years. Tennessee could do far worse than Golden.

And the stuff about "he sucks at Miami" is completely idiotic. Did you miss the part where Miami is staring down the barrel of a potential death penalty?

TB needs to get real how Cut keeps making lists is beyond me .What is he 55 and 56 in the won loss column what makes that a homerun. Golden is a huge question mark.Petrino with all his baggage is still a great choice.
