A very telling stat about our 2012 offense

The moral of the story is if you are on the hot seat, don't bring in a coach to completely change up your offense or defense(Clawson & Sal). It does sicken me to think how many more games we would have won if we had brought in an experienced DC.Like the OP said, averaging over 36 PPG should translate into a 10 win season.

I shudder to think of UT's future if we had won 7 or 8 games this year. Dooley would probably be the HC through 2015 and would run the program completely into the ground.

A semi competent DC would have had UT in a decent bowl game last season. A semi competent HC with motivational ability would have had UT in a pretty good bowl game last season.

Sal should have been fired after the GA game.

12-1 Oregon averaged 40 points per game. We saw what they did to K-State last night. They are beast of an offense. And ESPN has been praising their "stellar offense" all morning.

Meanwhile. 5-7 Tennessee averaged 36.2 points per game against a tougher schedule in the toughest conference in football. I have no problem saying our offense was just as good, if not better than Oregon's.

Beating a dead horse I know but it's extremely frustrating to think about what this team could have been with a semi-competent DC.

and a semi competent head coach

Yeah we were real good at scoring points when we were behind by 20 points but not so good when the game was close and it really mattered. Our offense was defendable when the game was on the line and the defense was in the game...overall not that great. Numbers do lie sometimes....

BS. If the D gets a punt in 6 plays or less then that game becomes a huge blowout and they don't become tired. Teams didn't run over the D because the O scored too quickly/much. The D got run over primarily because Sal's system and play calling were terrible.

When that game was on the line our offense couldn't put it away. We already knew the defense sucked by that point. It is not like it was a huge surprise. Hell they let Troy throw up 700+ yards on them. Also I am not saying that our offense scored too much or even too quickly. Our offense didn't eat up any clock when the game was on the line and we needed to have a drive to eat up more than 30 seconds off the clock. Same thing happened to LSU in the bowl game. If they run more than 1 minute off the clock they win that game.

Most telling stat was TOP. We had the ball 26 min a game as to opponents 34 min. Our pooress defense was disaster. Imagine if we had the ball 6 more min a game. We should have easily averaged 40 ppg.

Dooley had so much confidence in our potent offense that he ran the clock out against Missouri and put the game in the hands of the defense in overtime.

Speaks volumes as to why we have a new coach now

Please.....our offense was nowhere near as good as Oregon's......you must not have watched the Vols or you just refuse to accept reality

Dooley chose to run out the clock after Tenn. received the football with about 40 seconds remaining. The offense ran 2 plays for zero yards before Dooley shut it down. Maybe he had memories of our potent offense at the end of the Florida game, when Bray finished with 7 straight incompletions, and the offense's last 3 possessions gained a minus 8 yards. The potent offense turned impotent when called on to respond.

Dooley probably should have just let Bray throw another incompletion on 3rd down and punted it back to Mizzou , and relied on our strong defense, which had just let Green-Beckham get open in the endzone for a 25 yard TD pass to tie the game.

“When you throw the ball, three things can happen—and two of them are bad.” General Neyland

In my opinion the best teams throw the ball because they want to and not because they have to do it. We had to do it and if Bray was off or receivers were off we would put that horrid defense right back on the field to get torched. I think we could have ran the ball more.

Dooley should not have ran the clock out and basically quit. If we look at our red zone defense opposing teams scored over 91% of the time and 60% of the time scored touchdowns. In overtime the opposing teams starts every drive at the 25. Odds were better of converting a third down than winning in overtime with the Salfense.

there were times in games that our defense made a stop only to watch the offense run 30 seconds off the clock and go 3 and out. While on paper our offense did some damage. They also left our defense hung out to dry. There is a huge difference in or and ut. Mainly that or has ran this quick strike offense for years and their d is used to being on the field again quickly. Or is one of the few exceptions in cfb on where a teams offense can strike fast and still manage to play fairly solid d.
exactly.

I am not saying that he should have or shouldn't have. I would probably have given it a shot, but my guess is that the outcome of the game would have been a loss. They had all the momentum in the 2nd half.

It will be great when the Dooley reign is just a distant memory. I just know our redzone defense was so bad that an overtime game would be a certain loss. A third down attempt had better odds.

Missouri's last 5 possessions ended with a 25 yard TD pass, a 24 yard TD pass, an 18 yard TD pass, a 10 yard TD pass, and a field goal in the 4th overtime because that is all they needed.

All of this after holding Mizzou to 7 points and 64 yards in the first half.

For the 1000th time--stats don't tell the whole story about our offense--It was terrible against the better competition! UGA's defense was not good and we did put up 37 on them--but choked at the end of the game. Same thing with S. Carolina--Same with Missouri...etc...etc...etc...VANDY completely shut us down!!!

Our DEFENSE was truly pathetic--worst I've ever seen on the field for the VOLS--

But it was the OFFENSE that failed on the field when we had opportunities to win the game. UGA--missed FG, PAT, and fumbled when 1st and 10 at UGA 27 yd line with opportunity to win game.

Against USC--same thing: 1st and 10 inside 25 yd line with game on the line and another fumble with opportunity to win game.

Defense and Special Teams lost us the Miss. State game--but Offense still didn't produce when it had opportunities.

Offensive stats are totally deceiving for the 2012 Vols and were padded tremendously against OOC opponents.

Hoping CBJ can get this ship headed back SEC championship game in the next few years!

GO VOLS! :salute:

Agreed, plenty of points for a very good season but at some point the defense has to occasionally make a stop. The same players, that were ranked in the top 30 in defense the year before, were run so far out of the stadium, they had to buy a ticket to get back in the game.

We should not forget that the defense did make some great stops. Problem was that it also had an unusual number of busts.

That was a jaw dropping head shaker. I don't recall seeing any coach doing something like that...ever.

Agreed we abandoned the run too often in side the 30 and resulted in not scoring when we needed to

Indeed. Part of "the offense" is the play calling. When we got 3rd and 2 on the Bama 20, we gotta have two creative plays with a fightin chance to catch Bama offguard, but pick up 2 yds. Not throw out back of end zone then bring in A.J. to run up middle. I know I should let it go and move on.
