A really good reply, did you see the TE of the 49ers miss his assignment and Purdy gets injured and that the end of the Super Bowl dreams. If and when Davis makes the field the I will suspect it’s a passing play such as a screen pass
I always enjoy your contributions, London Vol.
Situational substitutions that allow a player to "do what he knows" or is best at is normal--in a normal offensive scheme. But I'm wondering if that is ever an option in our offense (other than maybe a short yardage play following a defensive time out).
IF... I know what I'm talking about, these points might keep a player on the sideline until he's more fully prepared:
1) Heupel is going to avoid offensive substitutions that allow the defense to bring in fresh players.
2) Plays are called and changed from the sideline, even after a huddle in which a play might have been called.
3) Our QBs have options to audible out of a play if the defense makes a last second shift.
4) Many if not most plays we run demand each player to read what the defense is doing and adjust their routes, blocking, etc., accordingly.
If any or most of the above conjecture is true, then it seems doubtful a player would be inserted to run a particular play if he wasn't prepared to run other plays that might be changed to.
And even if it was done, the defense would be highly aware of any seldom-used player appearing in the lineup without an injury.
In that scenario, the inserted player might be most valuable as a decoy--but again, only if they stay with the original play regardless of defensive changes.
