This is a question I wanted to pose to everyone.

How much will a win for the Vols against Virginia Tech effect recruiting?

Is it a big need right now with the investigation and can help the coaches focus on something positive with the recruits?

Or will it not make a very big deal either way??

:hi:

I feel a win would help a lot. It would help back up what they have been selling. They could say, "in our first year we went 8-5 and finished by beating a top 10 team, etc." They could talk to kids and parents and say they want to build a national championship team and it wouldn't be all talk, the win would show they are on the right track and have something to show for all the talk.

I think a win will be HUGE for recruiting. Playing a highly rated and well respected program on national TV and getting the W will provide a lot of credability to CLK. It would be CLK's best win to date. Plus, being the last game before signing day, it will be great for the staff to have that game to point to as evidence that things are going well in Knoxville.

In addition, given the BS NCAA news, a big win will do a lot to show the cries that UT is "falling of the tracks" are entirely false.

UT has the most to gain in this bowl game than it has had in many years.

Usually, winning specific games is not as important as we might think, but owning Georgia and winning this game, I believe, are quite important. I agree, we need to put away any thoughts that Tennessee is falling apart. If we don't win, I hope it is an exciting game at least.

I have a feeling a lot of people will be watching on tv.

Well, conversly how much will it hurt us if we do lose? I mean we are obviously the underdogs, but could a bad loss cause the class to fall apart even more??

I don't think it will kill us if we lose but it would go along way in showing how much the program has turned around under Kiffin. It would also be an opportunity to get some positive exposure which we really need right now. In the end though I don't think this is a make or break in recruiting, maybe might push one kid who is on the fence looking for a reason one way or another.

i agree with the previous several posts especially NLVs "UT has the most to gain in this bowl game than it has had in many years." getting passed over by the cotton and outback is the best gift we could have gotten. thousands more people including recruits, will be watching football on new years eve, than new years morning. a primetime upset of a ranked team, will fuel the recruiting fire of this program.

Very important game in terms of recruiting. ESPN will pump up this game because its the only one playin and its primetime. This will be one of the most watched games of the bowl season because everyone will be havin parties and (of course) the guys will huddle around the TV to watch some football. AND IF we win, Eastern TN will be drunker then heck before the ball drops. HUGE GAME.

I happen to think East TN would be MORE drunk if we were to lose in a bad way. The only real difference is one is a happy drunk East TN, and the other is a drunk East TN that nobody wants to talk to.

This. The exposure combined with a win will be HUGE for a budding program trying to get more momentum under a first year head coach. Big game for the Vols.

I personally hope we beat them soundly. 34-9 kinda deal but I know that this will be one of the best bowl games I expect a great one even though everyone will count us out....

I just have this bad feeling that if we do lose...and in a bad way, it could really add to the issues going on and fuel the negative fire that the trolls/other coaches/fulmerites love....GO VOLS WE NEED THE WIN!

i would say cross reference teams' commit lists before and after a win or loss in a bowl game to NSD and see how they fared in overall rankings. I would do it but I'm in my fantasy league championship game this weekend. I think everybody on this board know my sarcasm level goes to 11 when we get these stupid vague "what will this 1 game mean to recruiting?' threads. I know, don't read them, but its like not staring at a chris chris wearing a bluetooth.

What? The OP was asking how a win in the bowl game will affect the program as a whole not just recruiting. IMO, the result in this game will be big. I beleive one game can have a profound affect on a program - see the 2001 sec championship game and where UT and LSU went the next several years after that game for an exampe.

there is a HUGE difference between a potential Nat Championship appearance and the Chik-fil-a bowl. As for it affecting the program I would say this NYE game will carry even less weight. The ascent of this program is about long term plans and a loss against a top 15 ranked VT team will not derail it at all.

A win would be huge in recruiting! We need a statement win and this would certainly fit the bill.

do you guys really think these high school kids will pick UT over USC or UF or Auburn because we beat VT? I'm not saying it will have no effect, but in the big scheme of things it is minimal.

you can't sell a program in the long term if you don't win ballgames.

Nope but it is a factor that can push a recruit one way or the other if they are considering UT.

I disagree, coming off a 5-7 season in 2008 and 7-5 this year, I feel every WIN is important. We need to get into the idea that we should win EVERY game..Go Big Orange!...beat VATech!

I agree, BIG GAME. Will help solidify a top 5 class or could be more fuel to the rivals fire!!!
