Advice on Living Abroad?

Did you know we have more in common as a species with fungus than plants do? Crazy

Yes, the chitin we think of as food is actually flesh.

For the record, any post of mycological nature I make is in response to your request for advice and should be regarded as a warning as to what species may be of hazard to you during your stay.

I have an opportunity to move to Quito Ecuador next year. I want to make a good decision, so I want to consider it from all angles....a few details:

We would go for probably just 2 years. The wife and I just need a little adventure and we could actually save quite a bit of money earning American $ and living a cosmopolitan lifestyle in South America. We don't have kids (part of the reason we feel the need for adventure). The wife has dreams of volunteering at an orphanage hoping they will give us a baby (pie in the sky). I speak Spanish fluently.

Who here has lived abroad and can give tips or insights about what I need to factor. Please tell me why you lived abroad, too (military, church mission trip, etc.).

For us it was finding those go to stores that we could use in a pinch that have us confidence we could live the way we wanted. It took about 6 months before we had our pharmacy, hardware store, home goods etc. We lived on base but spent a lot of time out in the local community and traveling around Japan so knowing where to go for general stuff was very helpful. And we didn't realize this until one day we ran a bunch of errands and realized we spent the entire day off base.

High altitude plus right on the equator... perfect weather for my taste year round in Quito. I can't wait to get a chance to go there and Esmeraldas.

Hopefully soon...
