Aeration and seeding time.

Got this patch of something in the backyard and wondering what it is/how to treat it.

I did already spray weed-b-gone on it. Figured if it was a weed it'd most likely die but if it's some type of grass it probably won't kill it.

Is that the crap that if you walk through it or something brushes against it, (I'm assuming) little seeds pop off?

I noticed some of that today...

I hadn't noticed if this stuff does the same thing honestly. I think that's called Bittercress or Shotweed though.

I really don't want to have to roundup a big patch of the lawn this late in the spring, it'll never survive the summer heat if I do it now.

Don't spray it. It's annual blue grass. It will die when it gets warmer.

Look back 3 post. Ob did reply.

Totally missed that because I posted right after he did.

Thanks! I'll have to figure out what will control this in the fall. Apparently the product I normally use stopped working or I somehow missed that part of the lawn.

Just read where a crabgrass preventer application in the fall should help with this. Hmmm

Fescue right??

Who knows about spreaders?

Well, I learned something new today. I bought a Scott's Edge Guard broadcast spreader at Walmart for my sister's house. I didn't see it until I brought it home but the padding on the handle was all torn and damaged. Didn't stop me from trying it out though. As it turns out I quickly found out that not all broadcast spreaders are equal. The spread was about as effective as a drop spreader with maybe a 3 to 4 foot wide swath. I've had this other one for years now, it's a Republic EZ Broadcast Spreader. This thing is awesome, it's a walk behind/push spreader just like the Scott's but this thing throws fertilizer out in like an 8 foot swath. I can literally do my backyard in about 4 passes it's so efficient.

I can't find anything online about whether this company is still in business but I'd love to find either another one of these spreaders or I'd settle for one that covers an equal sized path.

I know it's only April 24, but I've got some huge spots in my yard where no grass has grown this year. There's brown, dead grass from last year there but nothing growing, but it's more or less patches of bare ground. There was grass in these spots last year. I did put down some crabgrass killer last summer that hurt my yard, but not in these particular places as best I can remember.

During the fall I aerated the yard, and overseeded. This spring I sprayed the yard with Dimension and also some broad leaf killer. Later, I spread some Scott's fertilizer sparingly.

Parts of the yard look really good, but these bare spots are starting to worry me. What should I do? I am reluctant to scratch around in the bare spots after putting down the Dimension, but something gonna have to be done for these bare spots. Suggestions welcome.

Pretty sure yard is fescue, but not really sure.

Dethatch the ground using a rake and get all the dead vegetation off it to expose soil. Rough up the ground a little to get the soil loose. If it's really dry you can wet it a bit to help rough it up. Get a small bag of Scott's STARTER fertilizer(or any other brand STARTER fertilizer). I believe they even make it in liquid form that you just attach to a hose. Just make sure it specifies that you can lay it the same time as laying seed. Throw down some seed and spray or treat once with the starter fertilizer. If the patches are small you could also consider using one of those premixed containers with soil/seed/fertilizer combos. They can run on the pricier side though compared to throwing down your own seed.

Once the seeds sprout water the new grass 2 to 3 times a day but don't drown it.
