Huepel is still dealing with scholarship reductions and a depleted roster.

He needs to hit portal hard for OL primarily.

8-4 with past coaches was their ceiling. Huepel is looking at 8-4 as a floor with large gaps in talent and depth at key spots and not being able to fill an 85-scholarship team.

I will not evaluate him until I see him with several years of recruiting and a full allotment of scholarships. Anything else is unfair judgement.

But he has shown me enough to make me thing he can at least get us back to at least 8-9 wins/season as a floor. Hope he can get is to a 10-win floor with fill scholarships, but only time will tell.

How quickly we forget Pruitt, Jones and Dooley.

Here’s the truth of it. We’re going head to head in recruiting with elite teams right now. We’re losing a lot of those battles but winning more than in the past. We would need several classes of top five to close the talent gap on Bama and Georgia.
We will not be in the top 5 anytime soon

Do you actually follow recruiting? Tennessee is in on a lot of kids. Difference is Bama and Georgia have been recruiting most of these kids since they were in junior high. Hard to overcome that and build relationships.

Next year is going to be worse than this year unless we bring in some substantial talent...the whole offense team are Seniors. We are headed for a 7-5 year in 2024.
A lot of the starting line has another year of eligibility if they choose to take it. Not sure if that makes you feel better about next year but it would make a big difference

Yes, I follow recruiting closely. We are not close to top 5. There are 6 Sec schools ahead of us right now

So you actually think a better QB makes up the point spread difference between 3 of these 4 games - Bama, UGA, UF, and Missou?

UF and Bama, yes I believe a better QB changes the outcome of those games. The other two I feel like it’s a mix of bad QB play, lack of depth, and coaching.

Remains to be seen the reasons behind the coaching issues this season. Willing to consider it an outlier based on the other issues pointed out, but going forward we should be able to tell a lot about the coach, the staff, and the players in the system. Next year makes Year 4 - the “cupboard was bare and the program a mess” excuse is on borrowed time.

What ranking are you going by? Assuming you’re counting Oklahoma and Texas as well. 5 schools if you count those two by 247 rankings. If they land Seaton those ranking get seriously shaken up. Star average is very high this year, they just have to close some kids. Seaton is the one that would bump them up the most though.

I’m sorry but people on here are so delusional. We literally had 60 something scholarship players and still won 7 games in the first season. We still didn’t have a full roster in year 2 and still go 11-2 beating Alabama and winning the freaking orange bowl! Year 3 we have been depleted by injuries, clearly lost a lot of talent from last years team that made a huge difference, and Hendon Hooker had a heisman season. You know the past 3-4 coaches we probably would’ve been happy with an 8-4 potential 9-4 team after a bowl win. Admit it, an early year 2 11-2 surprise got our expectations too high too early. 7-6, 9-4, 11-2 would’ve been normal progression of a program, but here we are and that 3rd record is in the spot where the 2nd record usually would be. Thats just how it worked out this time! I mean come on guys Josh Heupel is 27-12 now!! Year 4 is very important which means this offseason is critical with recruiting and the transfer portal. Just don’t give up on Josh Heupel so soon. After last season I’m still on the Heupel train. If he loses to Vanderbilt this weekend then I may feel a lot differently. As of today though please take everything into perspective, and remember what all we’ve been through.

This year is disappointing based on our no shows for vast periods of games but really the big difference from this year to last year was the qb play. If Hendon got hurt last year in game 1 and Milton was our qb I think our record in 2022 is the same if not worst than this year. No way we beat bama or Florida in 2022 with Milton. Probably don’t beat Pitt either. Now if Hendon was our qb this year I think we beat Florida and don’t think Hendon lays an egg in the second half against bama like Milton did. That’s a possible 10 win season.

College football is a qb driven game. Nico wasn’t just any 5 star but the top recruit on 1 major recruiting service and a top 2-3 qb on most others. Everything that has been reported out of practice is he is going to be a stud. It seems pretty evident that he and his family wanted a redshirt year which Heupel obliged. If he stays healthy we are looking at the next 2-3 years playoff caliber football on rocky top. Just need 9-10 wins to get in the playoffs most years which is going to be the main focus for every team moving forward.

The future is bright. Go vols!!!

We have been in a 5 year rebuild for half my life and I’m 59
You live anywhere near Chattanooga?
You remember when we rebuilt 75/24 split for 2 years then had to redo it because of a concrete problem and now it’s being done again.

It sucks when we keep having to start over because we hire the wrong person the first few times.
