He threw a bunch of 5 yard passes against what could be the worst secondary in the country.

Successful troll job if that's what you were after. If not:

Simply rewatch the Austin Peay game film from last year. Immediately after the game, the U.E.P (United Earthworm Protectorate) officially declared Worley to be a Weapon of Mass Destruction.

Last year, receivers were wide open all over the field. Worley's passes routinely landed 5 yards short or three yards left/right of our receivers on crossing routes. His arm was a drive killer.

Take away the two or three deep balls and the drop by Alton, and Worley completed 85% or more. Radical improvement.

DL for me, they got a lot of push and forced Chuckie to react quicker than what we've seen the last few years.

I would like to vote for OL next week...come on guys

Voted defensive line, since I really thought a clear improvement was shown. Hopefully, it keeps up.

Could also see voting for QB because Worley (after starting with his customary 3-and-out) clearly had the best game of his career. That said, it seemed like such an outlier, that I am cautious to say that it will continue until I see it happen again.

Linebacker Imo...Reeves maybin and weatherd are actual linebackers. They aren't walkons, converted safeties, or fill in players. They fit the actual philosophy of the position...and as another poster alluded, Utah state was garbage. This game may not have been indicative of anything.

Hands down it was the defensive line. Lots of questions surrounding this group going in to the season, and I think they did everything you could ask from them. Did a good job containing CK and came up with a big play on 4th and 1 to get the stop when it was still a ballgame. Shout out to Worley too...looked much more confident and in control compared to last year.

Nothing wrong with converted safeties. JRM is one after all, and will be a damned good one.

With you on your general point regarding Jalen and Chris and fitting the philosophy but JRM is a converted safety.

Worley didn't have time to throw many deep balls because they stacked the box and blitzed often. That was the cause for all the short passes and very limited rushing yards. When I watched the replay of the full game, I noticed Utah State stayed with that same gameplan the entire 4 quarters. Our OL may not be as bad as some think, maybe they were just dealing with too much in this first game as a unit.

Most LB will look that way if they're allowed to run free on nearly every play. Utah State couldn't handle 3 man fronts, getting to the second level was out of the question.

He did appear faster though.

I think the reports of AJ working on his speed and pass coverage this off season are apparent after this 1st game...

I went with offensive line, although they did really well in the pass blocking, the run blocking was undoubtedly subpar.

That sounds like they didn't improve then. Maybe you're reading the thread as "which unit needs to improve?"

Dline improved by a mile from last year. We have high motor guys who are getting after it in the run game. I also voted for linebackers because they did so good!

The staff tried him at safety but that was obviously not a good fit for his skill set. His best spot on the field is at LB...I was referring to Sapp, who's best spot on the field was S.

Nice job hating the team's starting QB by engaging in BS assessments. You have no earthly idea how good or bad USU's secondary is and you certainly don't know if they're the "worst secondary in the country".

The following were completions by Worley that had very little to no yards after catch....each were a little longer than 5 yds:

27yds to Croom
19yds to North
15yds to Malone
11yds to Malone
12yds to Wolf
12yds to Downs

Daniele Gray is the best player in the secondary. They had a 5'8" 150lb true freshmen playing along side him. They are awful.

He averaged 10 yards per completion and completed 71% of his passes. Haters gonna hate though.

His yards per completion is misleading. For instance the pass to Smith was a screen that went for 38 yards. Pass to Pearson was about 5 yards, same with Hurd.
