Also for me this episode completely redeemed him as Anakin and imo proved the problem was never him, it was George Lucas' terrible dialouge and directing in the PT.
Me and a buddy of mine have long felt like George Lucas, despite being incredibly brilliant, had some really cheesy dialogue in his prequel scripts. I don’t know how any actor could have pulled off the whole “I don’t like sand.” quote from Attack of the Clones. GL was just setting up Hayden for failure with that quote and some of the Padme conversations as well.
It was just really cool seeing Anakin and kid Ahsoka in live action for the first time. Hearing Hayden call Ahsoka “Snips” brought back some memories of great Clone Wars moments. I doubt this will happen, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a live action Clone Wars mini series with Hayden and Ariana. There was a planned story arc that got canceled where Anakin and Ahsoka were going to stop Sidious from obtaining kyber crystals. That would be a nice story for a mini series.
That was the biggest problem with the prequel trilogy, Lucas was surrounded by yes-people who wouldn't tell him something sucks. The OT he did have that up until ROTJ at least. There are clips of Mark Hamill even back then telling Lucas that "people don't talk like this." in trying to get lines removed or changed.
Agree 100%. By that time, GL’s ego was much bigger than it was when he was making the OT. Surrounded by a cast of relative unknowns aside from Samuel L Jackson and Liam Neeson in Phantom Menace, nobody was going to call him out on anything.
The prequel trilogy will always have a special place in my heart because I grew up on it and because of the epic lightsaber duels, but the script was just disastrous at times.
From a narrative perspective, I think the biggest mistake GL made from a story perspective was making the Phantom Menace about Anakin as a child. Had the first prequel movie been about Anakin’s time as a padawan, his turn to the dark side could have been more gradual and more believable than it ended up being in ROTS. I get the thinking behind introducing
Anakin as a kid, but it was just a mistake.

I think it was fine introducing Anakin as a slave. My personal opinion is that he was too young and it would have made for a better movie if he had been at least 13 instead of 8. Not to mention the already awkward age gap between little Anny and Padme.
Having said that, my kids love little Anny. I guess they relate to him. Maybe they grow up to be annoyed by him but that’s just more evidence that SW is at its heart a kids movie.
