After recording 17 tackles yesterday, Johnson moved ahead of Craig Puki among UT's career tackle leaders. If he stays healthy he'll almost certainly end up 2nd.

1. Andy Spiva (1973-76): 547 tackles
2. Jamie Rotella (1970-72): 413
3. Earnest Fields (1987-91): 407
4. Greg Jones (1974-77): 377
5. AJ Johnson (2011-14): 370

I think Rotella still played in the era that didn't allow freshmen to play so he only had 3 seasons.

On the other hand, I think AJ has really improved his draft stock this year over last. I know he was disappointed by his advisers that he might not even get drafted until the later rounds but it appears it was great advice. He was consider too slow in space last year but he has shown has learned the new system and now is flying around in coverage. His supporting cast has also helped him.

If I was a GM, I'd really want this guy because he's a football player. He plays the whole game, he loves to play on STs as a fearless headhunter, he is non-stop energy, he has stayed remarkably healthy through it all, and he's just a tough son-of-a-gun. I think his teammates would follow him anywhere.

I think he's going to have a really long & productive pro-career and will continue to represent his school well.

That play at the game yesterday, where AJ speared the guy trying to jump over the pile was priceless

As a man who was born in 1990.... how in the hell did Spiva get over 500 tackles?

Slightly before my time, but according to my father, our offense stunk in those days, so Spiva was on the field frequently.

Wow. I didn't know Fields was on the top 5 list. He was a local kid. I probably watched him play in hs 5 or 6 times. Cool.
