‘23 AL CB Rickey Gibson (Tennessee commit)

Credit as in....We didn't realize just how dominant he was last year. The DL has been better as a group, and still no one has played close to the level or consistency of Butler. You know, both things can be true.
What’s true to anyone who wasn’t on a sabbatical last year, is Butler was revered by this fanbase. When we were reviewing the departed players, he was considered the biggest loss…over Velus Jones, Alontae Taylor and Cade Mays. Stats didn’t paint him as Aaron Donald so maybe I won’t argue that most don’t share your “dominant” angle. He was a productive warrior who could’ve played in any era. I’ll ride with that.

No one said that Butler was ignored by fans by any means. We have much more depth this year on the DL, and we constantly rotate guys to keep them fresh. Last year, our defense played a ton of snaps and Butler rarely left the field as an interior DL. We were one of the best in tackles for loss last season, and it was primarily due to his play on 1st and 2nd downs. He brought it for 4 quarters every game. My comments about Butler are in correlation to our current interior DL. Which no one said they were bad either. How often has a NFL draft pick not been considered a big loss for this program in recent memory? Who on our current Interior DL has come close to the individual play of Butler last year when you turn on the tape? Great play by defensive tackles doesn't always show up on a stat sheet, and I still stand by my statement that he doesn't get enough credit for his play last year. I'm still trying to figure out how that statement was offensive in any way. Especially since that's my OPINION of a former Vol.

Making more excuses for bad coaching. Gotcha.

I’ve been team Banks all year. USCe performance is difficult to defend. But it’s an outlier for his defense. Defensive ppg are the stat that matters and besides USCe, we’ve been pretty money in that dept.

But in this back and forth I’m not even saying the secondary was good last year. I’m saying it makes sense they are worse than last year bc they lost 2 NFL players. That’s not an excuse for anything. If you lose a couple NFL guys off any unit then you’d expect that unit to take a step back.

Omari Thomas at times has been pretty dominant.

Not going to bring up stats because some would argue making more tackles makes you the lesser player haha.

After Will Martinez left his play dipped.

I don't think Willie is the main problem.

Banks is too comfortable with the bend but dont break concept.

Perhaps the strategy is to invite teams to throw. Better chance of creating turnover / momentum play. Doesn allow offense to grind out drives and chew clock. Gets the ball back to our offense quicker.

Seems they execute this rather well.

Willie Martinez is not, has never been, never will be a good coach. Mix that with Tim Banks you get a terrible defense.

Curious what stats back up the DL playing better than it did last year vs the pass? I don’t have those numbers available but I know we have about 10 less sacks than last year. Not sure about hurries, etc

Actually based off the NCAA stats page we had 20 sacks last yr in 13 games and we have 27 in 12 games this year. Then Run Defense this year we are #19 allowing 111.8 rush yds a game and last year we ranked 42nd and allowed 142 rush yards a game. So our DLine has improved considerably this year. Compared to our secondary, which ranks #124 in Pass yards allowed with 284 a game..last year we were #106 and allowed 265.8. So the secondary continues to get worse and the DLine has has improved.
