No board from the summer?
That’s AWFUL. Did someone a personnel guy get fired or replaced ? How is there such confusion and re-ordering?
And this coming from the Vols Rival site is pretty damning.
that’s unforgivable
Feels like one of those flags where we knew Dooley, Jones, and Pruitt weren’t going to work out.

I mean, we took a LB coach from Michigan, DC and DB coach is from Penn State, Martinez has coached everywhere. It isn't like he brought dudes from Austin Peay to coach here.
Lol bass, we didn’t bring a DC that knows how to recruit apparently and Willie isn’t a hall of famer

Banks hopefully gets it going but willie is a has been and verdict is still out on the LB coach

Not surprised to hear this news. I’ve been on this board for a long time and never post much anymore, but there are some very smart people on this forum who understand football. These people have been saying our defensive recruiting is garbage for 6+ months and many are crucified for it. You’d think that everyone on this board after the last decade would not give coaches “the benefit of the doubt”. The blind faith some people have in UT blows my mind. We are well past that now. You either get results on and off the field or you are a Dooley, Pruitt, or Butch type coach until proven otherwise. We are now in the “prove me wrong business” not the “benefit of the doubt business”.

With that said, I love JH. I think he’s the best coach we’ve had since Lane. However, he’s going to be packing his belongings in about three years if he doesn’t fix the defense. We don’t have to be world beaters when we have a top 10 offense, but you can’t put mid-major product on the field in the SEC. I think Banks can be a good DC, but his run here is likely slowly coming to an end due to recruiting. That’s not completely on Banks either as Pruitt’s classes left very little talent at baseline. However, we had to find at least 2 CB, 1 S, 1 LB, and 1 pass rusher who could come in and make an impact for us next year. I like the DL hall so maybe one of the young guys comes in and helps. However, our LB and DB recruiting is mid-major level, probably because we have mid-major level coaches in those positions. And I know what some of you are thinking, but the transfer portal…well, that’s not looking so hot either at the moment. I hope I’m wrong. I want to be wrong, but until we make a major hire at DC, we are going to receive the recruiting/field product we currently have. Look at what Arkansas and Texas A&M have done in terms of DC hires. Both made solid defensive hires over the last few years. Hell, even AU got Mason who I think is a very good DC. That’s what it takes to win in this league.

Ultimately, if the defensive product on the field sucks next year, JH has a one time shot to make it happen before his job is in jeopardy. He’ll get a pass for now due to the disaster he inherited, but when year four rolls around, the excuses are off the table. Just my opinion. Feel free to bash away.

Probably not easy to sell being on the field for roughly 40-50 mins per game.

Not easy to sell, but also gives the opportunity for players to put up impressive numbers. Opportunity for more sacks, more picks, more tackles for loss. Would Tennessee have nearly as many TFLs if the defense wasn't on the field so much?

It's weird logic but it partially checks out haha

I asked Brent about our defensive recruiting struggles. This doesn't make me feel better:

I mean there weren’t many evals to go off of. Maybe that was the issue. Especially after we dropped our top wants. I assume the coaches thought we would snag our top guys and we didn’t and then they had nothing to rebound to.

Either way. The 2023 class is the one that really matters. If we wiff there. We are in trouble.

Guess this is where hiring a DC after a few assistants can be a problem. Mixed opinions and can’t agree. At end of day Banks needs to get organized and take control if he wants to succeed
