I understand that nobody wants to uproot their family, but if you have a career in athletics, you should know that’s a possibility going in. Otherwise you’re seriously limiting your opportunities for growth. I feel bad for military families that have to uproot for far less money. Harder to feel bad for someone having to move to make 1.5 mil a year.Imo, it isn't that he doesn't want to be here. I don't think for 1 second that he would interview if he didn't have legit interest in coming here. The issue is no one "wants" to uproot a family and move somewhere else. He's from Columbus, OH. His did went to school at OSU. It isn't an easy decision. If he had no ties to OSU, I would be willing to bet he'd already be on campus. If OSU were even in the realm money wise and offering him the DC title, it wouldn't even be a decision for him.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of offering 1.5 million to someone who's never been a coordinator a day in his life. SURELY there are candidates out there with better credentials! I'm not knocking the guy but how is he worth this kind of financial risk vs someone who might actually HAVE experience as a DC? I just don't get it. How many actual experienced DC's out there at group of 5 schools would move here in a heartbeat for that kind of raise and title? Or even FCS defensive coordinators?
#1 recruiter ... you win with players.
Speculation whether that’s true or not, but if I ever try to stand in my son’s way of a job offer that he wants to take, I pray someone beats my ass for it.His dad wants him to stay and he’s giving in to daddy. As I’ve seen on TOS, this sums up perfectly his hypocrisy:
“Al: hey Bobby, is coach Al at Ohio State. So what do you say? Wanna be a Buckeye?
Recruit: coach, that’s kind of far from home and I’m close to my family.
Al: Bobby! Columbus is not that far from Chattanooga! That’s an easy weekend trip!
Meanwhile:
Heupel: $1.5M, DC and Assistant HC
Al: but Knoxville is far away from Columbus, I’ll miss my daddy...
Heupel: that’s an easy weekend trip and with that money, you can easily fly your folks here.”
Like Al Washington? He’s coached for 1.5 years at OSU. He’s been a great recruiter and coach everywhere he’s been.I posted this yesterday but that whole "#1 recruiter" BS is completely null and void at places like Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, etc as far as I'm concerned. I could recruit at Ohio State! Give me someone who's overachieved at recruiting at a place that's hard to get kids to come to.

When I was on active duty we moved on average every 2.5 years or so. If you're lucky you know someone at your new location but it doesn't take long to make friends and get in a groove. Most young coaches are nomads and move frequently, throw in the money these guys make and it's a no-brainer. Take the promotion and go build something, but that's my opinion.
Coaching the talent that we have is what has been the main issue at Tennessee. I am fine with getting great recruiters. Those need to be position coaches, not the coordinators.OK keep playing with 3 stars and loosing players to Georgia, Clemson, Alabama , Florida , LSU .. and stay in the middle of the pack ...
