We have a pretty good defense that seems to stop playing during the game for some reason.

Not sure your QB will see a defense (except UGA) that has disguised the defense as much as Alabama will this week. If your QB can figure it out, UT will win (maybe not the only reason). I’ve seen several of the Vols games this year, but does he have time to change play at line or do they just run what is called and hope to catch D in confusion?

Can I just pause for a second and ask you to clarify who your team is? When you say “Your QB”, you meant Tennessee’s?

Then whose defense are you talking about in the first line?

I don't think you make it to number 6 by not playing during the game. We simply need more quality corners. It's that simple.
I know some of you don't want to hear it, but these offenses more times than not, have average or sub-par defenses. Score, score, and score some more. That is Tennessee now.

Apologies for double posting, but I disagree with this being a win for Bama. They like the dressings, but an offense moving this fast doesn't give you time to disguise a lot without causing mistakes. Trying to do so will catch players out of position.

TNACTFAN, I recall you from another thread, and remember that you're a Bama fan. But most folks here won't know.

And I don't know how you picked your screen name, but it doesn't help identify you as Tide fan at all.

So you're going to have to reintroduce yourself and your fan status every single time you post, until folks get used to you.

BTW, why TNACTFAN? What does that signify?

Go Vols!

I’m a Bama fan, come on here during this week for some good conversations about football and look at it without Crimson colored glasses.

Everything is mostly scripted, that's part of the tempo, but if you're asking if Hooker can audible, then yes.

Sorry for double post, I wanted my name to be generic because if had a ROLLTIDEFAN, I’d be ostracized and not get good conversations. No bashing on my part just like talking football.

Hooker will make changes before the snap if he gets a look he doesn’t like. Its going to be interesting to to see how well the offensive line holds up and how the bail out routes are picked up by Alabama. I seriously doubt Hooker will have a lot of time to make a decision most of this game.

If you watched our game at LSU, the TD to Hyatt was hot route change at the line of scrimmage. Also, sometimes we will race to the LOS and do a "check with me" where the staff will adjust the play call.

Got it, and it makes sense.

To answer your original question, I think you just have to look back to last year's game, particularly the first three quarters. Pay attention to the Bama defensive backfield and LBs. I remember us frequently catching your lads out of position, still trying to get lined up at the snap of the ball, or confused about coverage.

Remember, the score was 24-31 early in the 4th Qtr. It wasn't a runaway game until our defense ran out of depth and energy. We're deeper this year. :)

So I don't know that Hooker will even be required to "figure out the disguises" in your defense as often as other QBs you've faced. I think our offensive scheme strips away a lot of your defensive scheme even before the ball goes into play.

Don't get me wrong: I think it's going to be a tough, tough game. Things are not going to go your way. Things are not going to go our way. Both teams are going to face hardship, and have their intentions disrupted.

But I do think we've seen hints of this before. Just need to re-watch the first three-fourths of the 2021 game.

Go Vols!

He occasionally audibles, but most of the time we run the called play, because we have 5 more scripted plays right after that ,and each one being snapped just 20 literal seconds from the play before.

Bama has some great edge guys, but LSU'S weren't slouches either, and they were completely ineffective.

Bryce needs to get healthy for you all.
Bama needs to sit him and take the L.

Good chance they'll see Tennessee again this year, and you want Bryce healthy for that . We've been getting to QBs all year and hitting them, and if Bryce is out there not completely healed he'll get hurt for even longer.

It's pretty common for the offense to rush to get set, then look at how the defense lined up. Maybe put someone in motion to force a reaction. Then either snap or audible. Just snapping the ball quickly is not the end goal.

The simple answer to your question is yes, Hooker has field general status.
For the Tennessee offense to click like it has been doing, requires a quarterback with a very high football IQ and can quickly read the field. Operating as quickly as they do Hooker immediately looks for a flaw in the way the defense has quickly lined up, if it is there ,quick snap go, if not, do a change that creates an opportunity because of the defensive set. Along with Hooker's naturally gifted athletic tools, this ability is what makes him one of the best quarterbacks in the business.

One thing I can assure you, Heupel and co will make adjustments as the game progresses and are strenuously meticulous at exposing defenses. If you’re an Alabama fan (which I assume you are), UT finally has a coach that plays chess, not checkers. He’s already thinking 3-4 moves ahead of his and your play.

Hooker called multiple audibles based on LSU's fronts and coverage. By all accounts he watches a ton of film, so I expect he will be ready for it. I also expect he will see some things he hasn't seen yet, but will quickly learn to adjust, especially by halftime.

Identifying coverages and making adjustments is something that I think this staff has does well up to this point.

Hooker changed the play multiple times against LSU after seeing the defense they were in. At least one of them was a touchdown off the audible.

This is one of Tennessee’s strengths. We won’t out smart anyone the traditional way. Those WR splits makes things super simple. You have to declare… so all your star and money players have to declare and then we will make them do what they are uncomfortable with. Your CB’s are in trouble for Bama CB’s they are suspect. If we win on the ground too then you guys are in trouble. In this one if we win the turnover battle we win the game… simply because nothing else is gonna stop us.
our offense isn’t something that is going to confuse anyone but it will confront your issues. And magnify them with the speed we play with. Good luck. I think you lose this one. Orange colored glasses aside.

I assure you there will be a lot of PI Saturday. Hook just needs to burn them on the blitz and Tennessee should be fine.
