Nared is an awesome talent certainly better than Burdick right now. She hasn't played in college and that is the only advantage Burdick has on her. I hope Holly doesn't have a seniority system because if she doesn't Nared is a starter.
The sad thing is that I think Burdick has tremendous physical gifts, but is too emotionally fragile to become a good player.
Someone on this board called her "the emotional leader" of this team, which is a crock. She's emotional, but the only positive emotion is against teams well beneath them. Against teams with talent, you can see in her eyes that's she's either scared or is panicking. That's no leader.
I don't mind Nared not being as skilled as Burdick as long as she is more composed.
Some of our best games was when Burdick made the effort to find her shot and shoot the ball. You can't stop shooting because you miss two or three ask Simmons who took almost 500 of the teams shots this season. She came close to taking as many shots as Harrison and Russell combined and hit .416 of them while Harrison and Russell hit .573 of theirs. We had no plan to get the ball inside except for someone to post and make an ugly pass to them which was half the time knocked away for a turnover.
Nared is more skilled than Burdick has a better basketball body. Very long arms and slender but muscular frame. She is gonna be an instant hit our first superstar scorer that shoots a high average in a long time.
Great picture! Who would have thought Oregon would turn out to be a hotbed for Tennessee.
Am I mistaken or did I see Alexa mishandle at least three passes in the All Star game?
And that's the problem with Burdick: she gets rattled to easily.
And that's the problem with Burdick: she gets rattled to easily. If she misses her first few jump shots, she stops taking them. The defense will just smother Izzy and dare Cierra to shoot, and she doesn't even look like she's considering taking the shot unless it's a putback when she gets an offensive rebound.
I suppose that you could see that this was an issue in her HS scouting report, where she prefers to be the wingman rather then THE man. That's hurt her badly.
Nared is an interesting prospect, but I'll reserve judgement until I see her in a LV uniform. But Tennessee needs an upgrade at the wing spot very, very badly. With Simmons gone and Massengale still not confirmed for next year, they need players willing to shoot the ball. With the returning starters, that leaves Izzy alone who has shown this willingness.
She had more turnovers than that. She had a couple of nice assists but she turned the ball over a LOT... at least six times. She dribbled into traffic, threw it away and just had it taken away from her because she was not as athletic as the other girls on the floor. Hopefully she will do better playing a team game instead of street ball, but it wouldn't surprise me if she is limited in the roles she can play. It is hard to tell from just one game, but if this game is any indicator the more athletic guards will eat her alive.
Nared looked good shooting the ball, but I noticed she did not fight for rebounds. At least twice I saw her with her hands pulled close to her chest to protect herself when under the basket. That was really odd because you just don't see that at this level.
Canada looked like a star. Wilson looked erratic, but has lots of natural athleticism.
Overall, I thought the talent on the floor at the all-star game was not as good as in years past. This seems to be a weak class.
Nared is a very good rebounder and strong. Even the commentators said it. why hurt yourself in a wild game like that remember the Duke player in the 2013 last year got hurt. In all Nared was outstanding.
The whole team gets rattled easily. That has been our problem for years now. When we just play we do fine. When we get in our own heads we lose or struggle. MD called us out and we wilted. That was smart of them because it is easy to get in our heads.
Consistency and confidence is what we need to strive for next season.
I firmly believe that. If we get rattled, it's on the coaching. I know we got rattled last year in the Louisville loss--which would be inexplicable given our pedigree and Louisville's lack of pedigree. But if you factor in the personality of Warlick, then you can see why we get rattled. Does she strike you as a confident, tough-minded, sharp coach? Not me. She doesn't have the personality to run a program like ours. That said, I didn't see us getting rattled against Maryland, tho Warlick said afterward the team came out nervous. I saw nervous and panicky against Louisville, but I just saw bad play against Maryland--or Maryland's good play.
RE Middleton: I hope she is great, but I will say generally you need quickness at guard. You need quickness at all positions--basketball is a game that puts a premium on quickness. The Ct. men's team won the title last night with their good guard play--both quick, both good on both ends of the court. ND women's have good guards. UT women have not had good guard play for a long time. Too many guards who were not quick; and too many one-dimensional players at guard (simmons) and at other positions--massengale is talented but has obvious deficiencies that become glaring in big games; same with graves and burdock. Carter is a top-caliber guard: she has skills, quickness and toughness, and can play well on both ends of the court (but she had an oddly disastrous game against Maryland). How many guards like her have we had over the last, say, 12+ years? Very few. They are out there--but we've done a poor job of talent evaluation during recruiting process.
I agree with you with everything you said but I truly don't think Alexa Middleton will play much of PG in college. At least I hope! I'm 90% sure she was recruited to play shooting guard here at Tn, even though she might seldom play point guard if really needed. In high school she played shooting guard and only played pg for maybe a little more than half of the season cause the starting point guard got hurt and they needed her to run that position. So I don't think we have to worry about much PG play from her.
