Hiring a Saban defensive coordinator for head coach would be like hiring a Spurrier offensive coordinator.

You're getting a glorified position coach who has a coordinator's title without the control or direction involved with it.

Smart needs to get away like Muschamp and prove his ability outside of Saban's staff.
