I thought Rodriguez was a WVU alum. Wouldn't that be a dream job for most coaches? Why did he leave for Michigan? Did they offer him tons more money that WVU wouldn't match or did Rich think the Wolves job was more prestigious? Very confusing to someone not close to the situation or just doesn't give a crap.

You may remember that Rodriguez was heavily pursued by Alabama, to the point where they (Bama) thought it was a done deal. He backed out at the last second not only for the predictable raise from WV, but also because they promised him some changes that he'd been fighting for. Minor stuff, apparently -- I seem to remember reading about him wanting the ability to give comp tickets to high school football coaches, for example, and the other things were seemingly about that level. Harmless, little things. Anyway, Rodriguez signs the new contract, comes back to WV -- and then the administration apparently proceeds to renege on everything it had promised. So when Michigan came calling, he said "To hell with you guys" and left without looking back.

Plus Michigan is obviously a much more prestigious job. Leaving your alma mater for a job like that probably gets a lot easier once you decide that the administration is screwing you.

I thought he held out on Alabama for a raise at WVU. I had no idea about the little things you are discussing. Hmmm...no wonder he left his Alma Mater.

Thank you. That answers the questions I was asking. It seems like what you are saying is accurate since WVU sued Rod for all the buyout money with no regard for the idea they may appear to be a bunch of cheap ass punks.

I'm struggling to think of any place easier to recruit than USC

"Hey, you want to come live in LA for a few years?"

That's pretty much the only pitch you need

I think having a state with a population around 34 mil doesn't hurt either.
LA has changed to much through the years to want to live there IMO. It's fine to visit.

That's what happens when your AD loses his mind and promotes an average position coach to head coach because of a win over a sleepwalking Oklahoma team.

If Chokelahoma has taught anyone anything, it's that a BCS win over them is nothing to get psyched about.

There were so many back-and-forth accusations between Rodriguez and the WV administration that it's hard to tell what's true, but a quick Google gave me this list of things that Rodriguez was supposedly promised by WV as part of his new contract:

1. Allowing players to keep textbooks for resale.
2. Waiving a $5 charge for high school coaches to attend WVU games.
3. Having authority over distribution of sideline passes.
4. Having authority to allocate funds from the 1100 Club for coaches.
5. A committment to increase pay for his assistant coaches.
6. Additional money to pay graduate assistants.
7. Hiring an additional recruiting assistant.

So not much, in the grand scheme of things. Certainly not enough to let the football coach who built your program leave over.

Based on that, Hawaii should be flush with national talent every single year.

Yeah, it's more like "Come live in LA, play for National Championships, bang models, go to the NFL, play for Super Bowl Rings, make millions, and bang more models"

I am sure Pete Carroll is a good salesman and all, but it would be somewhat akin to me buying a car lot and unloading Corvettes for 10 bucks.

it's amazing that they wouldnt' give him those minor minor things. That AD should be fired immediately. I can't believe that west virginia fans actually blame the coach for leaving for michigan. It's not as though he was asking for 10 mil a year or something. I bet $500 that west virigina in our lifetime is never so good again.

There were other things he was asking for, like upgrades for the facilities that had a lot to do with his decision from what I understand.

Haha, isn't exactly a tough sell.

You forgot, "rack up stats against terrible teams, and bang models"

I don't like Rodriguez but Stewart's struggles aren't surprising. His promotion reminds me of Sanders' promotion. The Peter Principle applied too quickly to both guys.

rejoicing in Rich Rod's struggles at Michigan might want to look at the undisciplined, out of shape squad Country Bill Stewart is putting on the field. The Mountaineer faithful doesn't realize how good they had it. They will soon.

WVU fans drank too much Koo-Aid thinking RR leaving was a good thing

Rodriguez said that he felt like things that were promised to him weren't done in regards to facilities. I think this is a cop-out and he just wanted to make more money at a more prestigious school. Then again, maybe he just isn't as loyal to his alma-mater as you and I would be. He helped WVU become relevant and I think he could have eventually gotten into a BCS bowl or NC game.

Rodriguez got West Virginia to two BCS bowls.

and their fans assumed, foolishly, that they could now magically win 10-11 games a year regardless of who was coaching.

Fail.

yup. WVU just doesn't have the tradition or recruiting base to be a consistant top-10 team. they should have done ANYTHING RR wanted them to do.
