Random thread, I know.

Who would be on your all-time SEC team? I'm basing it on what they did in college, not the pros. And there's a bias toward players I've seen play. Some names that come to mind - lots of forwards, fewer PGs and Centers.

PGs - Pete Maravich, Chris Jackson
SGs - Allan Houston, Gerald Glass, Jeff Malone
SF/PF - Bernard King, Dale Ellis, Jamal Mashburn, Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins
C - Dan Issel, Shaquille O'Neal, Melvin Turpin

Goose Givens should be included with the SGs.

The best SEC player I ever saw in person was Chris Jackson. He lit us up for 53 his freshman year in Gainesville.

Bob Pettit was on every published all time team 20 years ago or so. He has Bernard King-like numbers for his three years at LSU in the early '50s. I'd add him to the list for completeness

I forgot about Leon Douglass. He was a force for Bama in the '70s and took Indiana to the wire in the NCAA tourney during their 1976 undefeated season. Its a close call, but I'd drop Turpin for Douglass.

Pretty good list. I would add Tony Delk to the SG's, Chuck Pearson to the SF just for the heck of it.

Groza and Macy might help. Don't see Glass. Would take several over him, but Delk and Goose fo sho and probably Maxwell.

There's no way at least one of the Buck Johnson/Derrick McKie/Robert Horry run of Alabama forwards doesn't make the list. Corliss Wiliamson and Vern Fleming are better than a number of people on the initial list. Al Horford is also not getting his due.

He never has.

Bob Pettit is like the Red Grange of SEC Hoops.

Sad to say but i had never heard of Givens. Would love to see his game vs Duke in '78. He deserves to be on the list.

Maxwell, Pearson, Delk, McKey, Johnson - totally forgot about those guys but not sure I'd put any ahead of anyone on the list other than Glass at the SG position - (I remember Glass being a scoring machine)

Considered Fleming - perhaps his D and dishing were better than I'm giving credit for. But overall game better than Jackson or Maravich? I don't see it.

I tend to see the guys from earlier in my childhood as better than more recent players, thus no Horford over any of the Forwards on here. Perhaps an unfair bias.

And is Williamson better than any forwards on there?

Agree, though Mashburn struck me as an exceptionally versatile player too. I recall one year Jackson scoring 28 in the first half vs UT, then getting no more than 3 or 4 in the 2nd half and UT winning a thrilling comeback behind Clarence Swearengen.

The 5 best college players I was most impressed with after seeing them live are Jackson, Mashburn, Stackhouse, Durant, and Grant Hill. All seemed to have the ability to take over games.

Though not the first, Mashburn was one of those kids that transcended the game in the early 90's, helping usher in the era of the "point forward" and perimeter bigs. Loved his game.

Yep. Loved watching him.

Though a huge vol fan, I actually liked UK bball a lot under hall, sutton, pitino and tubby. I can't bring myself to cheer for calipari though.

Givens was a small forward with a silky smooth jumper.

Ralph Beard wasn't so bad at guard, either. Louie Dampier was a lights-out long-range bomber.

This Chuck Pearson that has been mentioned, if you're referring to the former Auburn player, it's Chuck Person.

Al Horford is also not getting his due.

If this is college only, I disagree. Al Horford's career numbers are very close to Chism's, with Chism having a slight lead in PPG over his career, and Horford having a slight lead in RPG over his career. Obviously Horford won 2 championships, but his better supporting cast could be argued as a plus or a minus.

Horford shot 61% and Chism shot 47%.

Their last years on campus, yes. Neither were that high for their careers. Chism's low percentage can be partially attributed to the fact that he took nearly 400 threes in his career to Horford's five.

The bottom line is that neither should be in this discussion based on their play in college. Horford is very underrated at the NBA level, but his numbers just don't warrant him being included in this discussion imo.

Pettit, McKey, Williamson and Horford were my others, but I couldn't remove anyone to find a spot. Distribution think of Fleming.

Positional thing. If we don't care positions, I throw out some of the guys on that list, like Malone, Glass and Mel Turpin.
