Time to go on record, Paulus or Smith. I like what I see out of Nolan Smith so far, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him pull more and more minutes from Paulus as the season goes on.

everyone knows my answer, but since this one is on record, I'll go ahead and say Smith will be the PG next year.

However, I'll add he's not ready to completely take the reigns yet, although I'd love to see him get more PT to develop. With Nelson, Scheyer and Henderson, Duke has the ballhandling talent to help him out.

Emain--you're a dukie??

Based on previous threads if you've paid attention, at this point I'll pick anyone over Paulus. I don't like the kid. He was just awful last night.

Scheyer should be starting at the point. He may not be a true penetrating PG, but he can handle the rock and pass well enough to get others involved. As evident by last night's game, Paulus needs to be coming off of the bench but Nolan Smith is not quite ready to start at the major college level. I like what I see out of him so far, but he could use a year of bench-work and a summer of Johnny Dawkins and next year will be his.

I have always been impressed with this guy. I thought he was going to be our next J.J. Not quite as good, but he is certaintly following in the footsteps quite well.

scheyer will finish his career at duke as a much more polished overall player than JJ.

Doubt that. Scheyer needs to gain some weight, and make better decisions when the game is on the line. He doesn't have that ability to take over a game like JJ did.

To answer the original thread question, I would say Nolan will be a back-up pg for the remainder of the season and possibly next year to. Don't know if anyone noticed this or not last night but, when he was taken out of the game the camera showed a clip of he and coack K hugging. That is the first sign that K is ready to hand him full control of the offense. I personally like Greg more as a 2 guard than a point. Either way it wont matter until Duke gets a post player.

They are like UT in alot ways, they are both Doughnut teams. Everything on the outside but nothing in the middle.

Scheyer can already handle the rock and penetrate way better than JJ ever dreamed of. His stats aren't as gaudy as JJ's because he has so much more talent around him. His shot may not be as pure as JJ's, but no one leaves him open either.

I would take Smith. He is more explosive to the basket and less turnover prone. Dukes problem is a big man. Our 7 footer cant walk and chew bubble gun at the same time.

Scheyer may be a better ball handler but he is in no way a better penetrater than JJ was. And, when Scheyer does create a lane and go to the basket he can rarely finish. Scheyer just doesn't have as much athletic ability as JJ did.

And, I would say that the talent level this year and the years with JJ's are not even close. The Duke team's with JJ, S-Williams, Melchiony, dockery, McRoberts, Nelson were much better than this year's crop.

Im not a Paulus fan...he will be incredible one game, and look like a high school point guard the next. The kid should have stuck playing QB in football.

Definitely not a Duke fan, but I like the way Smith plays.

i disagree on all accounts. JJ was far below average at driving to the lane his sophomore year and even by his senior season I wouldn't call it average.

Comparing melch, dockery and mcroberts to henderson, singler and king is laughable.

The team itself was much better, but there is no comparison when it comes to talent, this year's squad is ahead by leaps and bounds.

As for JJ Redick's athleticism...

honestly I can't stop laughing at the fact that JJ Redick and athleticism were just written in the same phrase and "lack of" was nowhere to be found

hey now just a minute... no one was better at running across the baseline corner to corner until he was finally open than JJ. I guess that's athleticism.

Nolan Smith should be the starter because anything he lacks on O and decision making, he more than makes up for on the defensive end, which is Paulus' true weakness.

As to Scheyer and Redick, Redick all day long for me. He was a once in 5 or 10 years type of shooter and they can change the game today. Sheyer is not that.

Oh, I'll never deny that Redick was a game-changing shooter, but it was painful to watch him attempt to penetrate or play defense.
