WARNING: This will be a rambling thought.
In football, I want a coach that will win. I don't care if he's got a dull personality or isn't media savvy (not saying Dooley is either). I want him to win football games at (nearly) all cost.
But basketball is different for me. I love winning and I take great pride in our restored program. But if you give me the option of a coach like Bruce (eccentric, fun, not great at coaching players up) or a coach that is brackground noise (but who can coach up players and give us a better chance at Final Fours). I would choose Bruce every day of the week.
I'm assuming Bruce doesn't put us in a probation that regresses us back in the Buzz days. I'd take the entertainment and outside chance at a title run over a "stable" coach that gives us Kentucky-ish consistency.
Am I alone on this?

Judging from the gigantic hissy fit that Vol fans have thrown about their "fun" coach being fired despite the massive, crippling sanctions that the program is facing, you are not alone.

I don't see why 'excitement' would be better than winning.

In reality, winning is what is exciting.

Mostly just want to win.

Although, Jerry Green's version of winning didn't seem enjoyable to hardly anyone. But I don't think that was because he was a bore (although he was) so much as because it seemed like constant underachieving.

I don't understand it, but after the past few days, I can honestly say that you are not alone.

Give me a winning coach all day.

Wasn't it MHF who said he'd rather lose with Pearl's style than win with Bo Ryan's style? Judging by the facebook page and the rallies, I don't think you're alone.

They say opinions can't be wrong, but you may have broken the rule.

Exciting basketball can come in many forms. You can enjoy Pearl's style or the Pete Carill precision-passing game. To this day, I still love Westhead's "The System" and enjoy it whenever I see it employed.

I'm not sure I really buy all the talk about how the last few days prove many UT fans would rather see exciting basketball than actually win games. I just think it's all fear of what will happen in the future.

Reminds me of poor old Randy Sanders. They were asking him about exciting offense (back in the day), and he said that when fans grumbled about exciting offense, what they really meant was offense that *works*. Fans will take airing the ball out, or they'll take 3 yards and a cloud, so long as the football gets to the endzone.

He's exactly right.

Bring in a winner, and the personality doesn't much matter.

JMO.

Agreed. Good post.

No. Give me the winner all day. If you give me Pearl (no sanctions) or Stevens, I'm taking Stevens every day.

I agree with this. Personally, I do prefer the Princeton-style game, myself.

I'd say we are pretty screwed for at least a couple seasons. We may not even have one recruit that signed with us this fall stay. Short-handed team definitely for a couple years. The next coach may end up being a stop gap to get us through the next 2-3 bad years and then they'll offer big money to a big name or up-an-comer.

Don't get me wrong, winning is fun. But we're winning with Pearl. There aren't many other teams who are consistently making it to the Sweet 16. If we could get a coach on the level of Roy, K, Izzo, or even Matta than I'm in. But we're not getting that guy.
I get the sneaky suspicion people are going to miss Pearl much more than they think. I know I will.

Let me also say that I understand why we're firing Pearl and I'm not against it. I'm just saying that I would take him over many other coaches that might have better X & O knowledge.

Basically what you're saying is that you don't care about basketball that much and so you need an entertaining coach to spice it up, regardless of whether he's that good or not.

Agreed. I find it exciting to see our coach severely outcoach the other team's coach. I'm not as excited by, oh, say, arbitrary substitutions or knowing with the game coming down to the wire that we're going to fail to get a decent shot.
