America is king of football

American athletes don't play soccer because they have so many other options here, all of which (at least in this country) are much better paying and have much higher visibility. There simply isn't any reason for a top American athlete to play soccer after he's about 10 years old.

I played soccer as a kid, but I didn't start watching EPL and international soccer very much until I started hanging out in Irish pubs, when I sort of picked it up by osmosis. It's great fun to play, but it's not exactly a sport which is crafted to appeal to American spectatorial sensibilities.

They're lucky nobody here gives a crap about soccer. We could field a rediculously good team in a few years if all our athletes didn't move on to play football, baseball, and basketball.

There is nothing I want more than to see the US beat the world at their own game.

^ Agreed. If the US actually had a shot at winning the World Cup, you can be damned sure I'd be watching every second. Football, basketball, baseball, racing and lacrosse are all ahead of soccer in this country.
