i wanted to post this separately because i wanted to give a specific example of something i saw that demonstrated vast improvement.

and when i say vast, it may not be a strong enough adjective.

sometime in the 1st quarter of the carolina game (before i changed the channel to watch missouri destroy florida), carolina had a 3rd down deep in its end of the field.

shaw got the snap and stood in the pocket and had all day to throw. that's not good. however, he couldn't find anyone to throw to. shaw is no heisman candidate but he is capable. when was the last time a qb had all day to throw against tennessee and couldn't find anyone to throw to?

he drifted to his left a little, as if thinking about taking off to run. but, it wasn't there. so, eventually he decided to run to his right (don't remember if he was flushed to his right or just decided to leave the pocket).

he gets outside.....and keep in mind, he still can't find anyone to throw to......and the tennessee defense was there so that he couldn't get upfield and eventually he just decided to sail the ball out of bounds.

i saw that play and my jaw dropped. tennessee was able to cover downfield and keep a mobile qb from doing damage once he left the pocket.

it happened more than once in that game.

it was just one of those things that jumped out at me big time.

I think one of the biggest differences about this game and last was that the stadium was still packed ten minutes after the game. For most of my student career, you couldn't have said that about the stadium ten minutes prior to halftime...

Good post 99. I noticed that myself. Our defense was a question mark coming into this season and the new coaches have put together the scheme that our kids can have success with.

impossible. Martinez sucked a young and inexperienced dc at ga under Richt in '05 so no way he can coach db's under Butch in '13.

Give last year's team this defense, and we go 9-3 in the regular season... but honestly, I'm happy we had a bad year. Got rid of Dooley.

99Gator, you are absolutely correct in your assessment. Coverage in the secondary is improving as well as pressure on the QB. A lot more improvement is needed, however this is the first year in several that I have seen us get better. Using last year as an example, it started bad and got worse. We don't have bad players, we just have players that need to be coached. I think we now have a staff that is doing just that. Got a ways to go, but the direction is a positive one.

Even more jawdropping evidence of improvement can be found in progress made by our special teams. Many contributors to this forum have noted the dramatic improvement that Michael Palardy has made, both as a placekicker and, even more so, as punter. He has become almost Colquitt-esque in terms of his ability to flip the field.

A less heavily emphasized point pertains to improvements that our special teams have made in kick and punt coverage. Thus far, opponents have returned 24 kickoffs for 521 yards, which averages to just under 22 yards per return. The longest kickoff return surrendered this year was only 38 yards. Punt coverage has been even better. Opponents have returned 15 punts for only 70 yards and 40 of those yards came on one return by Oregon. Taking that return out of the equation, opponents have returned the other 14 punts for a miniscule 30 yards. Indeed, our last four opponents (Florida, South Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina) have combined to return 10 punts for 14 yards (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football). Those stats don't even take into consideration the 16 punts that Michael has dropped inside the opponent's 20 yard line. The General would be very, very proud of our punting game this year. It has been a long time since our special teams have been an asset of this magnitude.

Good post OP was saying the same thing at the game!

This year "Dang no receiver is open!"

Last year "Dang which open receiver do I throw it to!"

Absolutely it was one of the best improvements I have seen in a long time. I saw the same thing in the third quarter Shaw was in the pocket had time, and had no receivers which is something I have not seen in years, you could see Shaw look for the lane to run right up the middle and my heart stopped. Luckily it appears as if Brett Brewer was right there to stop him and where we would have given up the first down it was stuffed and it was awesome.

I know that losing is bad, but leaving the stadium early is worse.

We can finally notice that our team is coming together and playing with heart and fire. This team has come a long ways since the Ky gm when they gave up and quit playing. Butch jones is the best thing to happen to TN football in a long time. GO VOLS!

It seems like forever since Tennessee has had a true pass rush. I've been waiting for Tennessee to bring that back; that unstoppable, hunger to collapse the pocket and bring the pain. It's a two way street: the coverage helps the D-line get to the QB and the pressure by the D-line helps the secondary. We're on the right track

it was there in the 4th qtr...don't know if it was just conditioning, desire,or a combination, but they were all over Shaw... 7 for 21 is a pretty good stat day for the Defense...and only the one big pass on the 1st play of the 2nd qtr when Coleman got burned...

The biggest takeaway from the game against USC is that the team blew a 17-7 lead, went down 21-17, played like total crap in the 3rd quarter, and was 10 yards away from losing the game (USC first down). And yet they won.

That would have been impossible under Dooley.

Too many try hards on VN.

Too many know it alls, really. That wasn't a try hard. That was a shot at a certain few who verbally accosted me for saying Martinez wasn't a bad db coach. Many said, wrongly, that he was hired just to shore up recruiting for butch to bring in another def staff. We have so many seers here, I pick my times to remind those clowns that guranteed failure before the men got here.

Not with Dooley as coach. Convinced the '85 Bears wouldn't have made the playoffs if Dools had been their coach.... only half kidding. Ok, 40% kidding.

Anyway, he's gone now. Thank GOD for Butch.
