And with all of this monitoring of cellphone calls and the internet...

This is what I have been saying the whole time.

The FBI was given direct leads and interviewed the damn guy that did it, and they had all of this information apparently available, yet they can't tell a real terrorist from a dude on the street.

Maybe this was the point. Maybe they want to use the bombings as an excuse to ramp up "security". I don't want my rights violated so the government can f*** around and do nothing when a real threat arises.

I'm afraid that's the case.

Except that the surveillance occurred before the bombing. They interviewed the guy and there was not enough to go to a judge to seek a warrant so as to listen to content.

If you want to be mad, be mad they missed what was in the public domain on YouTube. The Jihad vids might have been enough to get a warrant and even led to a search and finding the bombs.

In the end its still a human endeavor to detect terrorists it will never be perfect.

I agree that they will never detect all terrorists, but I'd also say that really isn't what they're using the gathering of information for. When Russian intelligence basically gave them guys with known ties to terrorists and the FBI did as little as they did with their abilities, then that should be a major red-flag.

I can't believe people like you are so willing to sacrifice basic privacy and rights for a failed program like this given the miniscule chance you will die at the hand of a terrorist.

Get off Obama's scrotum please. For the good of us all.

So, because the Boston Marathon bombings occurred, the government is just "****ing around" and "doing nothing?"

What particular program do you believe is a "failed program," or do you believe any and all surveillance programs are failures when it comes to terrorism? Are you not willing to sacrifice any privacy whatsoever for the betterment of national security?

Not only did Bush start all of it, but many GOPers support all of it.

I admit you have an argument about too much government power.

But when you make the lame-ass claim that this is an Obama thing you look really silly and you diminish the worth of your actually valid point.

Bush was rightly and thoroughly bashed when he did it. Obama has continued and expanded the Bush ideas and he deserves every bit he gets too. You should try to at least be consistent

Your blind faith of the gov't is very disturbing. You must be very young or mentally handicapped.

I'm sure you are a nice person, but you have no idea about the real world.

How exactly is asking for clarification of rockytop's position an indication of "blind faith in the government?" I'm still waiting to see where I've expressed my opinion of PRISM or surveillance/national security/privacy in general.

Also, it's a little silly to give me the option of being either "very young" or "mentally handicapped," then follow up with the caveat that you're "sure" that I'm a "nice person," don't you think?

Oh, and I'm a total *******.

Bush was bashed for it?

Then why is everyone at Fox expressing surprise at hearing about this for the first time in the last few weeks?

You should cut out the stupid comments as they really don't help your cause. Yes, Bush was bashed for it

I wasn't aware Fox News was the only news network, not to mention you're pretty much FOS that some on Fox didn't bash Bush for it.

Besides we're talking about you.

There is a huge difference in blaming the man who started it (which he DID take a lot of flak from the left side and extreme right side of the political spectrum over) and the President who proclaimed to have "the most transparent administration in history" who not only continues the program but expanded it.

I understand your political beliefs and can respect them. But what I can't respect is your consistent attempts at tossing the blame over to the right side of the political spectrum.

At what point do you stop and say "maybe the government has gone too far." Is it after guns are purchased illegally and sent to cartels in Mexico? Or how about when government agencies like the EPA and IRS are used to go after the political opposition? Or when the press is monitored trying to capture leaks? Or maybe when all of our communications are monitored with little to no public oversight?

Or is it going to be to much when more Americans are killed by terrorists including one of our ambassadors and the next cover up and marginalization begins?

No one bashed Bush at the time because no one knew about it then.

Again I agree that there is an earnest debate to be had about whether its a good idea. But pretending that its uniquely Obama is just false.

I don't think anyone will disagree that it was started under Bush. But the question and problem is...

Where does it end? Obama had the opportunity to put a stop to it by not signing the renewal of the Patriot Act. So where does this rabbit hole end? And more frightening, how much more liberty will we give up before enough becomes too much?

Obama is as much to blame as anyone. You've paraded around acting like none of the offenses of his ****ty administration have been a big deal, and his latest direct and dubious lying scheme are why he is catching crap for this. He is not to escape blame, and you're continuing to bring Bush up is pathetic. We all know this crap started under Bush, if not earlier under Clinton and Gore. But in your infinite bias you have failed to acknowledge that Obama spoke against these very activities, and, at least according to the leaker, has instead increased these activities even further.
