Another bracket - BEST SPORTS MOVIE EVER

#26

Honestly, I tried to do that. I tried to pick films that were either about the sport, or about someone who played the sport. For instance, I thought about The Basketball Diaries, but that's about a drug addict who happened to play basketball, and not about a basketball player.

I wanted the sport to be more than a marginal part of the story. However, my recollection of some of these films might not be great, so please give any recommendations for removal.

Fair enough. I would put movies like Breaking Away, The Karate Kid, White Men Can't Jump, and The Wrestler in a similar category as they are more about a working class family coming of age, a young kid growing up, a hustler, and a love story imo... and I like every one of these movies.

For example, Mickey Rourke could have been an aging stunt man and it wouldn't have changed the overall plot of the movie. However, if it appears you need to get to 64 movies and there aren't others that should be on the list, then I'd say go with it.

maybe add in some wild cards like Rollerball, Air Bud, Angels in the Outfield, The Endless Summer, Murderball, Senna, The Big Lebowski, and Debbie Does Dallas for kicks.

Boom. 64. NCAA March Madness style baby. Go big or go home.

I thought about Rollerball, but given that it's more an allergory than about sport, I left it off. Same thing for The Running Man. Murderball is a great film, but I intentionally left off documentaries.

Ah, that's what i figured, but you had Hoop Dreams in your list.

I'm fine with keeping Hoop Dreams and scratching out all other docs though, just cause Hoop Dreams is like one of the best docs ever. and maybe add Running Man to the list.

I should have said "most" documentaries. There are so many great sports docs that it would have inflated the list too much. Muderball, When We Were Kings, Beyond the Mat, and countless others.

I left Hoop Dreams because I think it's better than any scripted movie about basketball.

yeah, agreed. cool cool. Hoop Dreams is freaking fantastic. no problems with it being included above other docs whatsoever.

Truth be told, I've never seen Goon, but I have seen these others that are being mentioned. If you listen, you'll hear that we went for movies that you could watch over and over. A movie you'd watch all of if you saw it on FX on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Brian's Song was a fine movie to watch once, but who really wants to just sit down and watch that one again? While you guys are yelling at me for leaving movies off, why not bring up Necessary Roughness. If you're going to mention a movie as bad as The Replacements, you've got to also throw in Teen Wolf.
Truth is, we did this and Hoosiers came out on my bracket vs The Sandlot for finals. If you dislike The Sandlot, you don't have a soul. That is not hyperbole.

I'd watch that over a sappy crapfest like The Blind Side, plus Brian's Song is actually a good movie.

And you put Blue Chips on here, so you can't blast The Replacements.

That's a great list bw, but I think many of them could be weeded out by first defining the criteria. For example, if the focus is a "sports movie" then to me that means the movie should be about the sport (i.e. the sport is a significant part of the movie) and not just something that is "featured" in the movie.

I would describe Jerry McQuire this way; I don't really consider it a "football" movie.

And really I don't consider Field of Dreams to be a baseball movie because while it's a big part, it's ultimately not really even about that, it's a guy making amends with his dad.

I put both movies on the list because sport plays more than a marginal role. If you remove the sport from the script of either, then they are very different films. The characters' entire motivations are altered.

To give an example of a movie that features a sport, but in a marginal way: City Lights is often considered one of the greatest silent films ever made, if not one of the greatest films period. Chaplin's character takes up boxing to make money to assist the girl he's fallen for, but the story isn't about boxing, and his motivations would remain unchanged if the boxing weren't in the script.

Miracle and Mighty Ducks are two of my favorites.
I haven't seen Goon because it has Sean William Scott in it.

I think that's why i did watch it lol. I don't remember why but me and ny friend picked it out at Redbox one time and watched it before it made it to netflix.

For Love of the Game makes it for me. It might be more about the love story, but watching him go for the perfect game is just fantastic. Costner could almost have his own sub bracket:

Bull Durham
Field Of Dreams
Tin Cup
For Love of the Game
Draft Day (questionable)

Also, several of you are VASTLY overrating The Program. It doesn't crack the Top 20 imo.

It's an outlier because only golf fanatics have possibly seen it, but "Dead Solid Perfect" needs to be a 12 seed in this thing in order to upset an overrated 5 seed (like the Program)

Alright, I think I got a pretty solid list overall. 64 films in total. Much like the NCAA tourney though, we got 4 matchups to decide who gets into the big dance.

For what will most likely be somewhere around a 13-15 seed spot:
The Replacements/Little Giants/The Blind Side (football)
Coach Carter/Glory Road (basketball)
or, we could also go with Days of Thunder vs Rush if people prefer to have that one make it in over any of the other above options.

For what will most likely be somewhere around a 7-10 spot:
The Legend of Bagger Vance/The Greatest Game Ever Played (golf)
He Got Game/Fat City (boxing)

at some point tonight or tomorrow, I may do some research and calculations to try to set up a fairly accurate seeding.

Days of Thunder certainly belongs in. But if racing movies get included, I'd put le mans in. And if documentaries are included, this list is worthless without Senna.

Just thought of another one... does anyone have Trouble With the Curve on the list? Clint Eastwood, John Goodman, Amy Adams and JT.
