Both Casey and Rick have posted decent numbers and got big wins in their careers at UT, are you really ready for the Iceman 3.0? No, I am not taking anything away from Jimmy's abilities. But at the same time I am ready for California QB's to be gone. I hope Rick stays and coaches at UT, that is all. During the Iceman 1.0 tenure at UT, he never beat UGA. Before 1.0 we had beat them 9 years in a row.

what was wrong with casey clausen? is it because he's from california? the state of tennessee doesn't have good enough athletes to rely solely on them. ut has to recruit everywhere.

Casey ran like a duck. Don't forget he can beat Georgia with one arm tied behind his back.

My friend emailed this to me one day.

IceMan Upstaged by Lil' Brother Jimmy - We were curious how things were developing for young Jimmy Clausen, so we requested a third-party interview to give us the scoop on the youngest Clausen's progress.

The IceMan's Little Brother
Who:
Jimmy Clausen

What:
Football

Where:
Granada Hills, CA

We first read about you in ESPN the magazine. What was it like seeing yourself in such a big time magazine?
It’s cool just to see how many people recognize me, even though I haven’t really done anything yet. I just can’t wait to get strapped up and play for my high school. Girls have always adored me, but now the fellas are starting to take notice. It's cool though.

In the ESPN article Steve Clarkson called you, “the Lebron James of High School quarterbacks.” Do you like having those expectations, or do you wish you had a chance to get some experience before they came?
I like having high expectations because it makes me work harder and be better. But you can also fall further too. If you thought that the hype was excessive for LeBron James, just wait until you see what will be thrown my way. I can't wait.

With all this exposure and attention, do you have a target on your back? Will other schools be gunning for you?
Oh yeah. When I become the quarterback they’re going to blitz and really come after me. But I just have to keep my cool and do what I can do. It's cool though.

Playing quarterback runs in your blood. Your dad played and coached, and your brothers are starting and back up QBs at the University of Tennessee. Did you choose to play QB or was it expected?
I wanted to play linebacker, but realized I needed to be a lot faster and bigger. When I saw my brothers and what they could do I wanted to be like them. I wanted to be like Casey until he started losing so much. Rick is much better, but he can't learn the playbook. We are like the Mannings of California. It's cool though.

Do you ever have backyard football games?

When my brothers come home from college we throw the ball. It’s kind of fun because they teach me what they’ve learned at U. Tennessee, so it gives me a head start on everything. Rick didn't learn much at LSU, so we are trying to wipe it from his memory. Casey doesn't care much for Sandy Randers and his ridiculous play calling. It's cool though.

We understand you’ve been working out with guys from UCLA and USC. Does that give you an advantage to play with such big, quick guys?
You get used to how fast the college game is, and it just makes everything faster. I'm expected to go to the University of Tennessee, but USC has the style of offense that I like. It's cool though.

The High School game must seem like it’s in slow motion compared to those college guys.
It helps and it hurts, there are two sides to it. To go from throwing to college players who are so talented and so fast, to guys in high school that are untalented and slow, you really have to adapt. It's cool though.

So it helps to play against a high school defense, but hurts to have high school teammates.
(Laughs) Yeah. It's cool though.

Are you excited to gear up and go full speed?
I can’t wait. I don’t know if I’ll be the starter this year because there’s a senior ahead of me, but I’ll see some time. My parents have contributed heavily to the school, so it may increase my chances of starting. It's cool though.

That senior has got to be feeling you breathing down his neck and hot on his trail.
(Laughs) I’m just trying to work my way in there. As I said, my parents have contributed heavily to the school. If I earn the starting job, the senior will understand. It's cool though.

What other sports do you play besides football?
Playing any sport helps you become more athletic. Basketball, baseball and football all help with conditioning and agility. Playing three sports just gives me an edge. It's cool though.

What’s your biggest weapon in football?
Probably my vision–reading defensives. I’ve learned that from my brothers and from Steve Clarkson. It's cool though.

What’s the best thing about playing quarterback?
You’re in charge, the leader of the team, and you control what the offense is going to do. You know that you have earned the starting spot because your parents worked hard to be able to contribute to your school. It's cool though.

What’s the hardest thing about playing QB?
There are always a lot of people in your face telling you what to do. And when you do well you get too much praise and get a big head. When you mess up you’re horrible. It all comes with the territory. It's cool though.

What’s the hardest throw to hit?

The comeback, especially to the flats. It’s just a 15 yard route, but you have to throw it 30 yards on a line. You have to have a good arm to hit it Casey is glad that Sandy Randers took it out of their UT playbook. I don't know why. It's cool though.

How far down the road do you look in to your future?
My ultimate goal is to get to the pros, but anything can happen. You can’t look too far ahead so you just go day by day. If that Ohio State guy, Maurice [Clarette], challenges the NFL rule, then I may go straight out of high school. I have a few years for them to work out the issues. If LeBron can do it, I don't see why I can't. I will be taller, bigger, stronger, faster ... I'll be a stud by then. It's cool though.

Do you plan on playing for the University of Tennessee Volunteers to keep the tradition alive?

If they open up the offense by then I will. That would mean Sandy Randers leaving as offensive coordinator. I'm a run-and-gun, West Coast offense kinda guy. I can air it out, so it wouldn't be a good fit with the Tennessee run-into-the-pile type of offense. It would be Casey, Rick, then me - It would be the "Clausen Three Tennessee". I'll have to wait and see because Ron Zook has been calling as well; actually it was Steve Spurrier calling on Ron Zook's behalf. It's cool though.

Who would you say your playing style is most like?
I have a strong arm like my oldest brother Casey, and quick feet like my brother Rick. I just got the genes between the two of them. I'm a good combination of both. It's cool though.

So your parents finally got it right on their last son?
(Laughs) Yeah. It's cool though.

There you have it, Jimmy Clausen, the Golden Boy of prep school football who may lift the University of Tennessee Volunteers back to college football prominence. We are stuck in mediocrity right now, but the future looks promising with the dreams of Tennessee fans being

THat's interesting jinxy...considering Casey was a very good QB

You say he only won one bowl game...he threw for 384 yards against Clemson. I wouldn't blame that loss on him.

Ended his career with 61% completion and 75 TD passes.

You say Clausen never beat GA....Manning never beat Florida. So what?

http://www.tnriver.com/utvols/fbTotalOffense.htm Those are the total offense #'s...look who's number 2.

Look at the yds per season. Right after Manning, there's Clausen.

He's not a bad QB, and I don't understand how people can see him as one! He won a TON of games at UT, and you all **** on him. Rick did a terrific job against aTm, and you all act is if he didn't even know how to throw the ball.

You've never even seen Jimmy play, and you already have written him off.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but noone has the right to ignore the facts and spout off garbage. I don't know how many times i've heard people yell in the stands at Casey when what happenend on the play CLEARLY was not his fault. A missed block and a sack can't be blamed on the QB, that's the O-line's fault. A dropped pass...not the QB's fault. a WR running the wrong route, not the QB.

His job is to take the ball, and then get it to a receiver or the running backs. If they fail in their job, then you all just blame the QB.

Casey may not have been the best QB we've ever had but he gave his all almost every time the stepped on the field....Rick done the same thing...Bring on the little bro!

yea, well where is the iceman now...?????the last time i saw him, he was in the stands cheering on another clausen, who fell into a perfect situation with our running game and recieving core........man, i cant believe you want to even compare peyton and casey, hell, i think its against my religion to put those two names in the same sentence

Why aren't they comparable? They are the number one and two QB's in tennessee football. Many qb's don't go to the next level. Manning was obviously better than Clausen, but Casey was no slouch.

I don't think you can judge a player because they didn't make it to the NFL...how many teams do you think really NEED a qb every year. There isn't a high demand, so only the cream of the cream of the crop make it onto the field. I think Casey has the ability to play in the NFL (not start, but he'd be a reliable backup).

For one thing Peyton was surrounded by better players.
Clausen's last 2 years he had horrible WR's considering his Jr. year the best receiver on the team was a TE. He had at best mediorce RB's and OL and still won ball games. Casey was not Peyton but spoiled little brats need to come off it, according to his stats he was #2 and if you don't like Clausen then your a very, very sad excuse for a Tennessee Fans and really need to find another team to root for.

I wonder if that had anything to do with a lack WR's, decent OL and pathetic play calling.

How soon shortsighted fans forget:
Let's see:
2003 - UT was in the game till an RB fumbled on the goal line and completely turned momentum. Talk to people who know the teams and at Half UGA was bouncing off the walls and the whole team quit.
2002 - Clausen was HURT. or are you so blind you forget!
2001 - I seem to remember UT leading until Fulmer pulled the pooch kick and Chavis called the wrong Defense and UGA marched down the field and scored in less than 38 seconds.
2000 - UGA beat UT 21-10 and UT had the ball at or inside UGA's 20 yardline 4 other times and went for it each time on 4th down with an automatic kicker on the sidelines. Each time they ran for it on 4th so who do you blame that one on? Bad OL, Bad playcalling or bad running by the RB.

Some of you need to open your eyes and learn football before you spout off like you know something.

Some folk never cease to amaze me.

Could someone please tell me how many 3rd team All-SEC recievers Casey had to throw to during his last two years here? And if I'm correct, he had very little help coming out of the backfield as well. If you take a look at his stats during his sophomore season, you get to see what type of QB he could've become had he had half the support that surrounded Payton and Martin when they where here.

I will never forget the comment made by Mark Jones who was one of his best recievers during his Senior season. When asked about the intercepyion that put an end to UTs comeback attemt againt Auburn, he replied that he was to tired to make his cut inside on the route, which lead to the decisive pick and ended UTs chances.

In an offense built on timing, how can any QB have success when they can't be sure that thier recievers are going to be where they're supposed to be?

Also, take into consideration the sorry rushing attack over the same period, and the lack luster performaces from the line and it becomes difficult to understand how we were able to have what success we3 did have.

All he did was keep his head up, and leave it all on the field despite the grumblings from unappreciative fans.

Thanks Casey, and I hope we do better by your baby brother.

Like Peyton was Mr. Swifty and considering UT had a chance with a Freshman QB leading the team he could have been right!!!!!!

Casey bashers are the lowest form of UT fans
