Another Dobbs Thread (concerning academics)

Unless college has really changed a ton since I've been there, he's taking the pre-requisite classes right now anyway. He'll dip into the hard stuff come Spring semester.

He took most of those per-requisites in high school. And its much different for an engineer.

He would not get into his real aero classes until 2nd semester sophomore year at minimum. Calc 1,2,3... Differential Equations, Chemistry, Physics. Core classes first 3 semesters. Something has really changed since I took AP classes back in HS is that now everyone is taking AP. My daughter is supposedly taking AP classes as a Freshman (sorry I digress about our crappy education system). This is not saying Dobbs is not brilliant. Likely he is taking his pre-engineering curriculum but definitely not into his aero classes as of yet. A lot of folks who even took AP Calculus in HS will retake Calc 1 in college especially if going into engineering to make sure they have these classes down. So he may actually be retaking curriculum he took in HS.

Yeah, he'll probably be taking Engineering Fundamentals this semester, along with a MATLAB class, and then probably calculus and another gen ed that he didn't get AP credit for. That's the typical first semester for any engineering student at the university.

Depending on how many AP classes he took (and whether he actually passed the tests--some of them can be quite difficult!), he shouldn't have a problem graduating in four years. Honestly, engineering isn't that difficult of a program IF you are interested in it and you actually try. And if a kid gets to school on an athletic scholarship and still chooses to pursue something like Aerospace, I doubt that he'll have any problems.

Hopefully he'll get into the League someday though, because that would probably be easier than getting into the Aerospace job market right now :)

If he's as bright as the information available suggests he is he will figure out a way to make things work out....football.....class....and time to enjoy college....what I'm saying is that he should have the ability to deal with whats on his plate, determine whats needed to obtain all the support and help he needs, develop a plan and if disciplined execute the plan...

I'm not going to suggest I was in a similar situation other than when I was in college 1969-1974 I was bright but school was never my first priority....having fun was and that was quite time and energy consuming :)....but I obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering while working full time, even being a minority owner of a business on the strip for a couple of years, playing a non revenue sport for a couple of years, receiving partial scholarship benefits that included living in Gibbs for several quarters, and as previously mentioned I had a great time socially.....and as I recall it I didn't think I was doing anything unique or special..... and in the interest of full disclosure I barely graduated and was never in a starting rotation in my sport..

My point is Dobbs will figure it out and if needed will have lots of help doing so ....the only real help I had was my local draft board motivating me to stay in school and out of Vietnam......

Well, there are those that think football comes first. On another note, it sounds like the kid wants a degree, so I don't think we have to worry about him leaving his junior year.

Unless he graduates in 3! But wait, I thought nobody cared because RF is the true QB on this team, lol! GO VOLS AND JD!

I'm an engineer and someone posted the classes he was taking on Facebook (damn stalkers) which included fluid mechanics and Calc based physics.

There were some other 3-400 level courses as well, and he's not taking any math classes. Generally speaking, all engineers have to take Calc 1 up to Differential Equations. So if he's NOT taking a math class (which are prereqs to most engineering classes) and is taking a few 3-400 level classes, he may be pretty far ahead of the game.

Heck, I just hope Dobbs and our players dont ever read VN. Those kids would be so screwed up.

It has and if he transferred in a bunch of AP creds, he isn't taking prereqs in Engineering.

^This. There aren't really any prereqs in the Engineering program anymore. If you are taking prereqs, it will take 6 full years to grad.

Edit: some said he took AP classes in HS so perhaps he transfered in enough credits where my question will be a non issue

This.

A young man I know is a football player at Oklahoma. He was valedictorian of his HS class and took several AP classes. He entered OU as a second-semester sophomore, clipping off 1-1/2 years of the basic four years of college. He will likely have a master's degree by the time his playing days are over at OU.

Watch the latest interview with Mizzou's freshman QB Maty Mauk and you'll wonder how he ever got into school. The guy epitomizes dumb football player jock.

Football for Dobbs is probably as mentally taxing as brushing teeth is for most people.
We have had some mental giants at quarterback lately.......Tyler Bray, Casey Clausen , Jonathan Crompton, Nick Stephens.......
