caller from Springdale just called The Zone (midday sportstalk in LR) and said the word out of Springdale HS is that Gus Malzahn, Andrew Norman and Mustain are headed to UT. Caller said that that is the word at the HS today.

I don't believe the Malzahn/ Norman piece of it myself, but think that the whole thing is getting interesting.

Cutcliffe may turn out to be better for recruiting than he is for the playcalling.

Here is an interesting article on Mustain's last game:

SPRINGDALE, Ark. -- There would be no miracle finish this week for Jenks. The Springdale, Ark., Bulldogs made sure of that Friday with a 44-0 massacre at Jarrell Williams / Bulldog Stadium.

An overflow crow of 9,000 and an ESPNU audience watched Arkansas' No. 1 team beat Oklahoma's Class 6A No. 1 with devastating ease. Quarterback Mitch Mustain threw for 259 yards on 17-of-24 passing with four touchdowns. Mustain also scored on a 1-yard keeper.

Receiver Damian Williams caught nine passes for 146 yards and four TDs.

Teammate Andrew Norman added seven receptions for 88 yards.

It was not only a battle of two states, but between two nationally ranked squads. The Bulldogs (3-0) came in No. 9 in the Student- Sports' Fab 50 and 14th in the USA Today poll. Jenks entered the contest No. 21 in the Fab poll and No. 23 in USA Today.

It was apparent from the start that Jenks was not as sharp after the emotionally draining 48-44 comeback win over Union last week. Springdale was razor sharp, especially at quarterback.

"Mitch put it right on the money," Williams said. "All I had to do was catch the ball."

This was only Jenks' second shutout loss in three years. Union blanked the

Trojans 37-0 in the 2003 regular season.

"They have a fabulous offense and we knew that coming in," Jenks coach Allan Trimble said. "Coach Gus (Malzahn) has done a wonderful job getting his team ready. Hopefully, we'll learn from this."

The Trojans managed just 125 yards total offense. Springdale had 404 yards. The Bulldogs had 17 first downs to Jenks' seven.

When asked about a letdown from a week ago, Trimble said, "Our guys weren't juiced up. Some played with great effort, but we weren't ready to play. I was disappointed with our offense."

Springdale could have had a 37-0 lead in the first half if Zach Pianalto had not dropped a Mustain pass with nothing but open field ahead.

It didn't matter.

Mustain did almost anything he wanted. He had 15 completions in the first half and three TDs. His TD strikes to Williams covered 20, 10 and 33 yards.

Jenks had few bright spots in the half.

Running back Devin Reed had a 30-yard run and finished with 38 yards on four carries. Chris Adkins managed a 25-yarder and totaled 44 on 13 carries.

A hero against Union last week, Isaac Norman had a 17-yard pass reception and finished with three catches for 26 yards.

Jenks defensive back Jeff Jackson added two interceptions.

Also... the beginnings of a heated rivalry between Arkansas and Tennessee?

I'm sure these kinds of things go on in recruiting all the time, but still... could be interesting.

Only thing that'd make this better if Mustain and company were from Alabama...

Some more on Mustain from USA Today:

Springdale has won 12 of its 13 games via the mercy-rule, outscoring opponents 610-98 in a no-huddle, pass offense.

Mustain endeared himself to the state earlier this year when he committed to the University of Arkansas. He hasn't disappointed Razorback fans, having thrown for 3,473 yards and 42 TDs on 173 of 242 completions.

He's not a one-man show, as receivers Damian Williams (57 receptions for 1,340 yards and 21 TDs) and Andrew Norman (57 receptions for 1,083 yards, 10 TDs) and RB Matt Clinkscales (16 TDs) all contribute to an offense averaging nearly 48 points.

Analyst Tom Lemming of CSTV gives Mustain the nod as the nation's No. 1 quarterback. "I'm impressed with the velocity on his passes and he does a great job of buying time while waiting for his receivers to get open," he says.

I also understand his Head Coach Gus Malzahn is an offensive Guru who has written a book about his no-huddle wide open passing attack...Maybe Tennessee is getting serious about opening up the offense....if of course this is not just a silly high school rumor.

Here is a Bio on Malzhan:

Gus Malzahn is the head coach at Springdale High School, which is one of the most tradition-rich programs in the state of Arkansas. In his first season at Springdale, his 2001 Bulldogs broke 12 offensive school record, and in 2002 he led them to the state championship game.
Malzahn began his coaching career in 1991 at Hughes High School. In 1994, he led the Blue Devils to the state finals, which had been their only appearance in school history.

In 1996, he took the head coaching job at Shiloh Christian High School in Springdale, Arkansas. His compiled record at Shiloh was 63-7-1. In 1997, he implemented the hurry-up, no-huddle philosophy into his offense. For the next four years, the Shiloh Offense was one of the nationÂ’s top yardage producers, averaging almost 7,000 yards per season. Coach Malzahn took Shiloh to four state title appearances and two state championships. Two of his quarterbacks set national records, and in 2000, his team ranked as high as 11 on the ESPN.com National High School Football Ranking.

Sounds like a fairly competent offensive mind... can't hurt to have another one of those on The Hill.

Just out of Ark:

Mustain ‘in limbo,’ mom says
BY OTIS KIRK AND CHRIS BAHN
ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

FAYETTEVILLE — Springdale quarterback Mitch Mustain has had contact with Tennessee assistant coach David Cutcliffe and is reconsidering the oral commitment he made to the University of Arkansas in August, sources said Monday.
Mustain’s mother, Beck Campbell, confirmed the presence of Cutcliffe at Tennessee and uncertainty surrounding current UA quarterbacks coach Roy Wittke has put her son’s commitment to Arkansas “in limbo.”
Another source close to Mustain, who asked to remain unnamed, said Mustain will reopen the recruiting process.
CutcliffeÂ’s recent return to Knoxville as quarterbacks coach is significant because Cutcliffe was initially involved in recruiting Mustain to Notre Dame. Cutcliffe, who coached Peyton Manning at Tennessee and Eli Manning at Mississippi, left the Fighting Irish staff in June because of health concerns after undergoing triple-bypass surgery.
Wittke has been in charge of recruiting Mustain to Arkansas. Reports of his dismissal and other uncertainty on the coaching staff are a concern to Mustain, Campbell said.
“Nobody has told us anything,” Campbell said. “We read in the paper that Coach Wittke is gone. Nobody has called and told us that. We’re like everybody else, waiting to see what they are going to do.”
Mustain, 6-3, 200, has long been considered the top football player in Arkansas. Mustain completed 190 of 270 passes for 3,817 yards, 47 touchdowns and 6 interceptions along with 6 rushing touchdowns, leading the Bulldogs to an undefeated season and the Class AAAAA state championship. He will play in the U.S. Army All-American Game on Jan. 7 in San Antonio and on Monday was named 2005-2006 Gatorade National Player of the Year.
Campbell said Mustain wonÂ’t be taking an official visit to Arkansas or Tennessee anytime soon. Mustain only recently registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse, and Campbell said she asked Springdale counselors on Monday to submit a copy of her sonÂ’s official transcript to the NCAA.
“People worried about him running off next week and hopping on a plane to Tennessee or wherever, he’s not,” Campbell said. “They can’t even book him a flight; he’s not cleared to take any visits.
“I waited until the season had ended because we really haven’t had time to do it. It’s not because he’s not eligible; he is. We just did what we said we would and focused on the season.”
Arkansas Coach Houston Nutt canÂ’t comment on Mustain or any other athlete until they sign a national letter of intent. Nutt also hasnÂ’t commented to the media about WittkeÂ’s reported dismissal, either.
Mustain committed to Arkansas along with wide receiver Andrew Norman before the season. At that time, Mustain chose the Razorbacks over Notre Dame, Texas, Michigan and Florida. Mustain had approximately 26 scholarship offers before making the nonbinding, oral pledge.
National signing day is Feb. 1.

I don't know one thing about this kid other than what I just read and I am ready to revoke Ainge's scholarship and tell Crompton he better look for a transfer if he can't handle being a back-up.

I think SC was hot on Smelley besides, the NFL likes Cut's qb development...three first rounders, one an MVP. Spurrier can't touch that.

You should hear the rukus this is all causing up here. It is very amusing. They have proclaimed Mustain as the savior of their program right after he committed and I have heard comments from the talk show host claiming that this kid was going to take them to the next level. I would'nt blame the kid for leaving. He hasn't even put on a Razorback uniform and is already under tremendous pressure. The sad thing is if that happens Nutt will likely lose his job and Mustain's parents will likely have to leave the state. I am not being dramatic when I say if he decides to go to UT it would be the equivilant to these Razorback Fans, of Peyton leaving his Junior year to play for Florida. Notice I did not say Alabama, it would be bad, but not that bad.

I have a strong feeling that there is more to this story than we are getting right now. I wouldn't be surprised if there have been a lot of other conversations going on behind the scenes that are making this a reality. To put it another way...this isn't some spur of the moment decision by Mitch. I really hope we get him!
