Nasty addendum- most of the command of the Conqueror came up on charges shortly after reaching base.

Seems they had, via their advanced version of sonar, tape recordings of the Argentines screaming as their crippled ship sank... and the Brit crew played it over and over for ***** and giggles, like a comedy bit on film-night for over a year before word got back home and they were made to stop...

I was in Brittain in '84 when they had the trials.

Which brings me around again to what I meant when I said I'm into military history, but not as much/ the way I used to because it started to give me the creeps....

It is interesting to see some of the "going on's" in the Civil War. When Lee's army was camped around Richmond butchers would bring out meat to sell to the soldiers. In general it was cat or dog meat. The soldiers knew the thicker the meat was the more bone it had cut up in it as a filler.

Not to mention the maggot problems.

War is crazy!

Since we're drifting off target and venturing into the Civil War....I never realized how much of the population in the South was actually against Seccession. Doing some genealogy I discovered my gggg grandfather and my ggg grandfather lived in northern AL and along with many of the people there joined a volunteer Union unit early in the war. It seems many in the non-slaveholding areas of N AL, N GA, and E TN either ran and hid or joined Union units.

Different parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia were staunch unionists.

In fact a General in Missouri emancipated slaves in the state, this is before Lincoln's grand emancipation, and Lincoln immediately withdrew it because of fear those border states would turn pro secession.

Interesting stuff. I have a family fact that NOBODY out there is going to believe but it's the God's truth! My grandfather and great granfather, (not great great or great great great grandfather) actually fought in the Civil War. For the Confederacy, of course, although nobody in my family tree ever owned slaves. They didn't believe in it and were too poor anyhow. I did enjoy the movie Gettysburg and want to visit the battlefields before I get too old to make the trip.

My father, who died in 1998 at age 106, was a WWI veteran. Fought in 5 major engagements as an artilleryman. He was posthumousluy inducted as an honoray member into the 101st Airborne Division (the day after he died). He also had the distinction for 4 years of being the world's oldest living laryngectomy patient. Although I'm a NC native, we learned about 6 months before Dad passed on that he was born in Cleveland, TN in 1892. I guess that partially explains my affinity for a certain shade of orange.

Back to the original subject of this thread. I enjoy SciFi too, and was a faithful fan of Star Trek, the TV show. I also liked Lost in Space. I watched the original series Battlestar Gallactica and really enjoyed the serial "V". Does anybody remember that one? My favorite all time Sci Fi movie is 2001, a Space Oddessy, with the first Star Wars flick a close second.

I can't contribute anymore to this thread beecause I've not watched any of the new BSG episodes, but you guys keep posting. I'm enjoying reading and learning.

V....I LOVED IT! The Visitors are our friends. It was all a political statement about Nazis and hatred. But all that aside, it was a great show. Ham Tyler was the man.
