Couple things Majors said:

1 - Fulmer has no idea what it takes to build up a program. He inherited what Majors and his staff built.

2 - It's tough to fire assistants, but it needs to be done. The implication seemed to be that CPF would not do it.

3 - The head coach is responsible for players not executing. They teach them, M-F, what they ultimately spit out on game day.

4 - Fulmer doesn't have to same values or upbringing as Majors. Majors wouldn't even comment on Fulmer!

5 - Special teams are something that is intricately taught, but is more or less paid lip service by most everyone these days.

6 - Randy Sanders is a good guy and a scapegoat.

That's some of it.

Fairly accurate though- and nice, considering.

Though you've also got to appreciate the irony about the firing assistants comment considering Fulmer doesn't have real loyalty, Johnny didn't detect that, and as a result last time we lost to S.C. Majors got fired in part because Fulmer went to the AD behind his back and demanded to be made HC or he'd take another job....

I got the same impression, Majors really dislikes Fulmer. It makes me wonder what was said by Fulmer to the A.D. when Majors left the program. Appears some of it got back to Majors.

Majors had a strong dislike for Fulmer; i.e. didnt have similar values as Fulmer, sanders is a scapegoat, no one had to tell me to fire assistant coaches, Fulmer never has had to build a program, etc.

Pretty amazing Majors said the first thing he reviewed on tape was UT's performance in the kicking game the previous week, and the first thing he reviewed about an opposing team was their kicking game. I'm sure thats the last thing Fulmer reviews.

He's still pissed, that's for sure. :realmad:

I don't have any good knowledge of the AD thing. But it sounds like Fulmer may have some knowledge of the AD's thing. :D

Fulmer said pretty much what I reported according to folks in the AD's office under Dickie (who didn't like Majors much either): Fulmer announced that he was getting feelers from other programs, and either he was the '93 HC at UT, or he was going to be HC somewhere else.

Frankly, given the bad relationship between Majors & Dickie, Majors' bad health, his total lack of Dougie's political skills, and the disloyalty of Fulmer, that Majors was able to accomplish as much as he did at UT.

Once again Coach Majors was fired over a salary dispute with UT President Joe Johnson and Phil Fulmer had nothing to do with it. Of course all of you anti-Fulmer people are always going to put your own spin on it.

Wrong, Dickie talked more publically than he meant to about Fulmer's meeting with him within days of the meeting..

My family's name is one of those that flashes by on the jumbo-tron at games, and we were heavy boosters years before the Dick-meister took over the AD job.

You're looking for conspiracy theories and glossing over the facts on the wrong side of the problem. Majors, between health and infighting with Dickie opened himself up, and Fulmer took full advantage. Those are the well proven and witnessed facts- and the facts from Dickie's own mouth.

That makes absolutely no sense. Listen to the majors interview, obviously Majors really dislikes Fulmer. Why would he dislike him so much if that was the reason he got fired?????????

I don't know why we keep talking about that time in our program, it was a tuff time to go through even for us fans. All I remember is, we were under the impression that South Carolina was courting Fulmer, and I think our AD made a knee-jerk descision. We will never know the truth!

Majors speaks the truth. Somebody neded to say it.I think the one that needs to go away is Fulmer.

2 things you can gather from that interview:

1. Majors is a bitter old man.

2. His analysis is dead on.

Long live King Johnny.

You know, I was never a huge fan of majors, but I liked a lot of what I heard on the radio. It's been a while since I've heard his Majors-isms.

But he definitely seems to grasp the fundamental aspects of discipline, teaching, training, etc.

Johnny's racial comments in the locker room cost him his job.
