Anybody worried about recruiting ranking?

I've said this early on. This year's class is a wash. These kids don't hv relationships with this staff. Outside of Burns on offense and Garner, BJM, and Banks on defense none were SEC or major P5 coaches. The focus has to be on 23, 24, and beyond. Also you hv negative recruiting going on due to the lack of closure due to the NCAA and the situation with Pruitt and him being paid.

Mullen has been a average to below average recruiter at Florida to their standards but he’s done quite well in the transfer portal however. Hoping Heupel can do the same because the NCAA cloud is hanging over us now and other schools and coaches are using that against us.

I agree with the OP, I am concerned. However the other side is it is easy to forget that Heupel was not hired during the normal coach-hiring cycle (November-December). He was hired about the same time as Dooley. So given that Dooley was hired in January 2010 his first full class would have been 2011. Looking back UT's class was ranked 13th that year (rivals) and that's about where I was hoping this first class for Heupel would be, top 15.

That said the situation in 2011 was far different. 4 years removed from playing in the SECCG and a group of recruits who remember Tennessee winning a lot of games. Compared to today where that history doesn't exist, and there is the potential for NCAA sanctions.

Yeah I'm concerned. This is shaping up to be one of the worst classes in the SEC, and I don't see any way to conclude otherwise. I think our coaches are doing the best they can given the climate of being under investigation, but we are extremely behind where we need to be on talent and this class isn't doing anything to close the gap. That's definitely something to be concerned about, but it is what it is. Just have to hope we can pick some guys up in the portal.

If you’re trying to flip a roster quick, it’s not gonna be done through your recruiting ranking. I’d expect we’ll target specific weaknesses through transfers. The portal has changed the game.

You can NEVER waste a class. However the focus in '22 needs to be the portal rather than HS. If the NCAA thing would get done then the HS recruiting might get some better. But UT needs guys who can go play next fall. For the most part... those aren't coming from HS and especially if you have to take a bunch of kids that need development.

If they call this class a "wash" then 23, 24, and beyond won't be theirs to worry about.

Aint worried about a thing.

We are trending in the right direction in all phases of the program right now. We will see the momentum in recruiting heat up for the 23 class.

Also not worried at all about us getting high quality transfers.

Look at how great our transfers have played this year! We got a ton of inpact guys to join a total rebuild. Not gonna be hard to get some quality players to join a top 25 level program.

Yes we are a top 25 level team RIGHT NOW. Ya don't take the gumps to the fourth quarter on luck alone and ya don't come within inches of beating a top 10 Ole Miss team with a banged up roster if you're not a top caliber team.

I am a little worried. I did not expect it to be a great class but UT seems to be in on so few players. Look at the front page of the recruiting forum; there are hardly any 22s even being discussed.

I used to be really focused on where we were ranked but with Heup, I feel like whoever we get will be developed and be just as good as any 5 star

I think we finish stronger than most think... banking on kids that have been on the fence to see our body of work and the huge potential in this program to finally pull the trigger or jump from another commitment... I don't think we will be top 15, but I hope we can finish around 20-25...

Whats our lowest class rank this millennium? 32 in 2008 right?

2023 is way better. 2024 might be even better than 2023

I think you may be right... I think we've got enough coming back and kids coming up that if we can get some key guys in the portal, we can weather next season... MUST have some O/D lineman and another LB ...
