Arlington... Tomb of the Unknowns JFK grave too. I think that Mt Vernon is just around the corner from there too.

Make sure you do the happy hour at the ES for the free drinks and snacks. You'll be walking a lot in DC so relaxing is nice.

Preorder you and your wife a couple SmarTrip cards for the metro. It's cheaper that way and much easier to keep up with than the paper tickets. Metro is the easiest way to get around, I love how DC's is set up.

A few good suggestions:

If you want a quiet lunch with a good burger and beer, hit up Lindy's Red Lion. It's on penn avenue down towards GWU. Hole in the wall spot, but I love it.

I'm also partial to the Matchbox in Chinatown-Gallery Place for wood fired pizza. Get the prosciutto. Right next to the Verizon Center.

And on my last trip we chose The Founding Farmers for our nice dinner and damn if it wasn't fantastic. Also on Pennsylvania I believe but just a couple blocks from Lindy's. I had the Prime Rib. Order the kettle corn as an appetizer.

Attractions:

The two musts for me are Arlington National Cemetery and the Holocaust Memorial Museum. At ANC get out and walk around if you decide to take the tram tour. You'll regret it if you just hit the highlights. Really go and soak it in and let it hit you all the sacrifices those men and women made. Changing of the guard is unlike anything I've ever seen.

There's a neat lawn in from of the White House that my girlfriend and I laid out on. She read and I people watched. It's a great view though.

I recommend doing the memorials at night. Lincoln will just blow your mind with its size. Korean and Vietnam just have a different feel at night to me.

It takes weeks to see everything DC has to offer, but pick out what is most important to you and enjoy it. Take some bottled water. It's a hot city with lots of walking and vendors will bend you over.

This is great info. Thank you. Wife not going, it's a guy's trip.

I'm a bit biased, but if you get a chance to see one of the service bands in concert, just go!
They have revitalized the area around the Navy Yard and there are a ton of great places to eat.
If the weather is nice Cantina Marina (600 Water St. SE) is a great place to grab a beer at happy hour.
For Italian my favorite place is Filamina in Georgetown, but you'll need a reservation there.
Someone mentioned Matchbox. Pizza is very good. There are multiple locations, including Barracks Row. They also own a couple of other places, Ted' Bulletin (diner), DC3 (hot dogs) that are worth checking out.
Speaking of Barracks Row, if you have the time and don't mind waiting in line, check out Rose's Luxury. They don't take reservations, so you have to stand in line by about 4:30 to get in for dinner. The food is amazing! If you have 3 or 4 guys, just order everything on the menu. I'm serious.
For steak, head into Arlington and go to Ray's the Steaks.
The changing of the guard is a must see, but also check the websites for the different services honor guards. They may be performing drill team events while you are here and that is worth checking out.
The Newseum is always good to check out.
If you're interested in politics, contact your senator/rep. They will sometimes do Capitol tours for you if the schedule allows.

Thank you. I might have to try Matchbox

This thread is making me miss the DC area. If you get a chance to get outside of the beltway I would suggest breakfast at Virginia Kitchen in Herndon, VA. You could also hit the Great Falls area if you want to see how the rich folk live (it is obscene!), or Harpers Ferry WV for the cutest little river town you ever will see.

Great Falls Park (gorgeous) - Great Falls Park (U.S. National Park Service)

Harpers Ferry - Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (U.S. National Park Service)

If you like American history there are many Civil War era sites to visit in VA and MD.

I doubt you have time to see it all but hope you have fun! I need to get back up there for a nice long visit. My daughter wants to see where she was born also (Arlington).

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to take my wife and daughter back there in a few years when my daughter is a little older. I'll try to stay for a week or so

The Korean memorial at night is breath taking.

Prepare yourself for the Holocaust Museum. You need to see it, but it's tough.

Our friend that is arguing her case at SCOTUS, her dad is a Holocaust survivor. He has his own private museum here in OC. Our office went and toured it about 2 months ago and I got to meet and speak with him. He wrote a book and I got him to sign it. It is hard to believe that humans can be so evil.

His name is Mel Mermelstein if you want to look him up. Anyway, we will be with his daughter, so I'm sure we will go.

I'll look him up.

It's a hell of an experience. Just some of the things they do to show the scope of evil will take your breath away, but it's something I think people need to see.

That said, I've never been more proud of my grandfathers when we left.
