It's 20 years later...hs kids go to so many camps and recruiting is kept up with much more. The sites are correct more often than not. I guess except in the cases of Robert Hubbs and Dontavius Blair.

Yeah, your hidden gems will lie with public 1-A schools for the most part like Huntland, Chapel Hill (Forrest), Richland, etc. Kids at small private schools go to those camps and have more exposure.

Did you by chance see Red Roberts coach Franklin County against Brentwood Academy? They played a home and away in around 1990-91. Carlton Flatt was coaching BA.

These teams matched up at least four times, maybe more, from the late 80's through mid 90's. Funny personal story looking back.....

My grandfather used to do the pa announcing for the fchs marching band. In 8th grade I had been accepted into BA and in my arrogant middle school ways I told him I was going to sit on the visitor sideline and cheer against the rebels. He in no uncertain terms let me know that would me a mistake to which I told him he couldn't do anything about it. Halftime rolls around and as I was making new friends at my soon to be school he ended his announcing by calling my name over the stadium PA system and telling several thousand people that I was sitting on the wrong side of the field. He still laughs as he recounts my embarrassed reaction.

Every matchup after that brought a special shoutout from my grandfather. Fun memories.

Lol! Great story!

One year at FCHS, BA lead 21-0 at the half. Red was catching absolute hell from the home crowd. In the second half, he successfully ran two fake punts and the rebels stomped back to win 28-21. It was an absolute classic game. They both had really good teams throughout those years.

As I recall, Phil couldn't picture a position for Randall Cobb. It happens sometimes.

You are incorrect on that one. UT knew his position well and offered him as a WR. Cobb wanted to be a QB and Kentucky promised him that was where they wanted him. We know the rest of the story.

Yeah, it hit me later on that I missed that story. You are right. He wanted a shot at QB and Phil said no.

At least Phil was honest. It seems that Kentucky did let him do some hybrid type stuff for awhile. He was a QB/RB/WR. Is that right?

So I guess it was a win-win-win for everyone involved.

Good guy, knew him personally. A very close friend of mine played ball at BA with him. I was recruited their with them but chose not to go. Had his head on straight but enjoyed the night life, done crazy nights back in high school and when he was on break from college.

We didn't need him...at all.

Then again, maybe Pennington, or Branndon Stewart for that matter, would have won more than one SEC championship and beat Florida during that time. Maybe even a natty or a Heisman. We will never know.

Does anyone remember the name of the DL from BA who went to Texas? It was in the 90's. I think.

Tommy Nunchucks. Played on the same line as Swords and Mitch "Brass" Knuckles. Sent more football players to the hospital than staph infections, iirc.

a 5* OL from Brentwood Academy in the early 90s. Josh was All-Everything and Fulmer basically passed on him. Stallings at bama committed him early and everyone in the media talked about how bama took a 5* OL from Tennessee.

Facts are I saw him play in HS and wasn't impressed at all. Wasn't quick by any stretch and wasn't aggressive. End of the story is he never saw the field at bama. I don't know if he ever played a meaningful down there.

Morale of the story: Trust your coaches. More often than not, they are right.

Or perhaps he simply wasn't coached up under Stallings. There's no way to go back and use this as a relevant example of anything definitive.

No I was stationed in England at the time and also had some temporary duty at Crete Greece.
