I'm not 100% on how the rankings work but, want to ask your opinions. Georgia has a bye week this week and we are playing UTM. If we win this weekend we will have same record as GA both at 7-0.

What are the odds that we move higher in the rankings due to both being 7-0 and our previous wins over ranked teams vs GA's wins over unranked teams?

Possible for a team to drop in ranks on a bye week?

0% chance, IMO. I don't think our strength of schedule will come into play until the college football playoff rankings come out. For as long as I can remember, the AP rankings seem heavily influenced by previous year's accomplishments and pre-season expectations... whereas the CFP committee seems to only consider the current season's performance.

won't happen unfortunately... we're going to need to beat them because the rankings have WAAAAY too much to do with preseason rankings and not who is the best/playing the best each week

The biggest issue is basing teams on paper and not body of work. Also, previous year’s results factor into the polls.

The polls aren't expressions of objective facts. Right now, UT has played a much stronger schedule than tOSU or UGA. But the perception of poll voters is that those two teams should be ranked ahead of UT. Having the same number of wins won't move voters like you suggest.

Yes. If OSU played Michigan this week and thumped them then they could very easily jump an idle UGA. By the same token, even a weak opponent can hurt you that way. Clemson plays undefeated Syracuse this week. If they beat them and especially if it is an impressive win then they could jump ahead of Michigan/UT.

Again, polls are measures of perceptions... not realities of who the best teams actually are.

We won’t pass UGA in the AP poll until we play them and if we beat them. The coaches poll has us at #4 regardless.

However,I wouldn’t be shocked if we are ranked #1 in the first playoff ranking.

Shouldn't the playoff rankings be out by then? Always thought they used those over the others. Would think well be 1 or 2 and Georgia vice versa

. . . I wouldn’t be shocked if we are ranked #1 in the first playoff ranking.

The first ranking comes out the Tuesday before the UT/UGa game. If both remain undefeated, there's no question both are in the top four, and perhaps one and two. So, they have a playoff "preview" in primetime the Saturday after the first announcement. The media hype will be off the charts.

If we beat UT-Martin and Kentucky, The CFP rankings come out Tuesday of the Georgia game week, I am sure they'll rank us #1 and it'll be a #1 vs #2 matchup in Athens.

Perceptions? Yes, and politics. Some of those AP voters have a hard time letting go of crap teams that they thought were going to be good before the season started.

Yep. Mike Berandino who writes in South Bend has consistently voted UT lower than their average. Currently he is UT's low vote in the AP poll at #6. He has Bama STILL ranked 3rd.

The only way for Tennessee to move up in the AP poll next week is if Iowa shocks the world and upsets Ohio State.

That happened when my son was a student there. That day at Kinnick will forever be etched in his mind as college football euphoria.

I wouldn’t worry about the rankings. If we beat UGA we’ll be #1. We’ll find out if we’re worth that rank soon enough

Georgia is # 1 and rightly so until someone beats them, however Tennessee should be # 2. The resume is head and shoulders better than the buckeyes.
It's the same nearly every year OSU and Wisconsin are highly ranked preseason to grab a share of those viewing markets. They play no one so they remain in the top of the rankings.

Florida may take care of that for us.. I see that as a huge trap game for them

At the least, if UF gives them a close game throughout, the doubt will start creeping in and we'll be smelling blood in the water. Nothing would be better for us than UGA to come in with their confidence shaken.

And yet oddly enough they rank us higher than the coaches, which is interesting.
