I'll certainly defer to you in these matters, I was only trying to point out that large forces are not as effective confronting an enemy who prefers to hide among the population and strike via explosives and using hit and run tactics.
As for the part in bold what specifically need to change for us to be successful IYO? Do you see any reason to believe they will address the problem and move forward?
I agree that smaller more specialized and well trained units are certainly more effective in confronting an enemy like we see in Afghan. We learned how much more effective units like these can be in Vietnam, our LRRP's were essential in gathering intelligence and harassing their supply corridors. I have always enjoyed reading about those men and their experiences from Vietnam.
You are correct, large forces are not going to do a thing for us in this scenario. In fact they would be self defeating.
Do I see a change for us? Nope. The rules in place for warfare as we abide by them are not relaxing they are in fact, tightening up.
What will cause a change? Whole scale American epiphany? The groups that scream and holler about enforcing and making up these rules are either not US citizens or a small, very vocal minority that the press eats up. In simple terms US citizens do not want to know what atrocities are being committed and are not prepared to deal with them when they are shown via the media. As you know, bad things are going to happen in war. Things that will make you evaluate your support and in the end, if you do not accept and forgive your own, all is lost.
