Are we the Penn State of the SEC?

I think it is a fair comparison. We are close but not quite. Talented enough to challenge and at times be more than good but not quite consistently elite either. I would say you could take OSU, UGA, and Texas out and play a tournament with ten to twelve teams and we are all so similar that it’s crazy. PSU, Indiana, Us, Ole Miss, Boise, SMU, ASU, Alabama, ND, I think Oregon, Miami, and Clemson are just too flawed to overcome the talent disparity right now but are all really good.

Penn State has a legitimate shot to win the natty. So I’d say not lol
Do they really?

I mean sure they are still in the mix and we're not, but does anyone think they can beat Ohio St, Oregon, UGA, Texas, much less several of those teams to win it all?

Good program that will win 9-10 games a year but can't beat the elite programs in big games?
I think we’re more akin to Michigan State or Wisconsin right now: good program that competes and might make the playoffs once in a while, but never a serious contender on the national scene.

Yeah we got exposed, and get exposed, in big time games like UW and MSU does.

Penn State is at least competitive in those games despite always losing them.

That's a really dumb comparison. Tennessee was just in the CFP. That is being a contender. The emotional reactions on here are so stupid and childish.

Things aren’t as bad as we think. Our athletic department has the ship building steam. We just lost in the playoffs. Our Baseball team is the reigning Champs and poised to do it several times the next decade. Basketball team is currently #1. Idk if Heupel will get us there but he’s earned our support thus far. Let me repeat that I’m highly embarrassed and disappointed in that performance last night but it’s a football game and stuff like this happens. If anything, getting embarrassed like that is everything the young players on the roster needed in order to come together and build this offseason. Let’s be real here, championship teams are built from Jan-August. Let this loss sting. I do think Heupel needs to hire some better coaches around him.

Danny White has earned some trust. He has proven himself capable of bold and risky moves (see Kim Caldwell) and a good judge of coaching ability. If Heupel is unwilling to make some changes to the staff .... I have every confidence that White will force the issue. Let's see what happens. These are not the worst of times for Tennessee athletics.

I'm not even sure he has anything in his contract that allows him to necessarily lose road games with no consequences. His contract bonuses are based on performance. He picked up 200, 000 k for just making to the first round of the CFP's.
He makes money for things like finishing in the top 5/ 10/ 25 in rankings.
It's in his financial benefit to win a big road game.
Maybe we throw in an extra 100 K or so next year for a top 25 road win.
Nice demonstrations of appreciation but won’t result in road wins. It assumes he has another gear he’ll hit for a 1% road-win bonus. He’s already trying to win them. The CFP $200K was a 2% bonus.

We're Clemson without the ACC bottom feeders to pad our schedule.

Same region, fan culture, in-state high school talent is about equal, same elite programs around us fighting for recruits.

Same "keep it in the family" coaching staff that has hobbled Dabo . A true NFL franchise guy like Watson/Lawrence/Hopkins etc. will cover it up, but we're lacking that. Some staff changes have to happen or nothing will change here.

I think your response is dumb. Sorry you feel like what you saw last night shows we’re on the cusp of a national title.

I would rather be the Penn St of the SEC than the Vanderbilt, which is what we were for quite the stretch before Huepel arrived.

Didn't say the words "on the cusp" .... but when you are included in a 12 team playoff, you are certainly one of the contenders. You are trying justify one extreme, by going to another, which hadn't been used.
