Are we wrong about Banks and this defense?

We all watched the Florida game. Some of us understand that playcalling isn’t a magic wand, and neither are adjustments. Young players in key spots make mistakes. Florida had a great gameplan and attacked our weaknesses in a hostile environment. Get over it.
Get over it? i Reckon I can say what I want same as you, move on

The simple fact is that most of us want it all and we want it now. I also think the fact that Heupel was able to turn the offense around so quickly fueled the impatience even more. If you can't see that the defense has gradually gotten better over Banks' tenure, I don't know what to say. There will be some ups and downs, but as a whole, they're clearly getting better in my estimation.

Vols #25 in total team defense through 5 games. Much better than last season. #21 in total team offense. Down a bit but gotta be expected after what we lost. Recruiting has been really good on the defensive side of the ball with a lot of young kids playing so I'm super stoked about our defense in the coming years!

Statistics aren’t always good indicators of performance, especially when comparing teams That have completely different schedules.

The first problem is you’re looking at all the wrong stats. No one cares about total yards, total rush yards, total pass yards, etc. Even total points is a bit of a dated stat. We should be looking at points per play, yards per play, points per drive, etc

I have been an out spoken critic of Banks and this defense as a whole. So have many others. I am still out on Martinez although the DBs have looked a little better. But back to Banks. Could we be wrong? So through 5 games we are 4-1. Here are our rankings in the country in defense.

Total defense: (28th) (6th in the SEC)
3rd down defense: (26th) (4th in the SEC)
4th down defense: (14th) (3rd in the SEC)
First down defense: (25th) (4th in the SEC)

Red zone defense: (49th) (5th in the SEC)
Rush defense: (40th) (7th in the SEC)

Team Pass Efficiency Defense: (36th) (5th SEC)
Tackles for loss: (3rd) (#1 SEC)
Sacks (tied for 3rd) (#1 SEC)

I realize that we really haven’t played anyone but many teams ahead of us have played equally easy schedules or even worse. For example Kentucky. Now they are ahead of us in many defensive categories. But they have played an easier schedule than we have.

So what does everyone think? Now I am not saying we are an elite defense by any stretch. But could it be that our defame is improving? I am pretty sure most of us had Rattler shredding our defense. Like him or hate him, he was playing as well as anyone and we stifled him. There is a strong possibility that Banks is improving.

The defense looks quicker this season.

his defense works tremendously well against teams with weak or injured olines

The only things I feel that I know for 100% right now.
I love Sampson, and I strongly like Wright and Smalls.
I hate bubble screens at this point.
The offense is very much hit or miss on any given day.
This isn't Tennessee's year to challenge for the east.

We haven’t played anyone yet, idk if we’ve even played a team that will be bowl eligible at the end of the year… A&M will be a big test for both sides of the ball next week

If the defense maintains this level of play though the meat of the SEC schedule, absolutely fans should back up on the hate. If however, it’s the same ole screen door defense we’ve seen that last couple of years, I think it’s safe to assume we know what we have in Banks as a DC.

Yeah I was reluctant to criticize banks considering our offense wasn’t exactly helping

I think it is much safer that those who think they know, actually don't know.

When I watch the replay of that Florida game it makes me absolutely sick to see them running and throwing all over that defense and they did at will...No We haven't been wrong about Banks, He has taken advantage of playing bad teams early and were enough to pad some stats but remember Austin Peay?...Yeah they ran up and down on us too...I am not sold on Banks at all...Sorry just my opinion.
You call 19-24 for 166 1 TD with an average per pass of 6 yards throwing it at will???

Good point. But are we paying 11-1 money for a 9-3 Staff?

Would you call that the work of "folks in the know"?

Go Vols.
By the way ... nice post and I get where you are at!!!

If you notice the money was NOT distributed 'equally.' Which might suggest who we want to "protect" from departing.
Also, adding another year is a vote of confidence.

However, I am predicting that we will see turnover after this season, and record has nothing to do with it (in my mind).

If your number had been 10-2, I would have said absolutely.
I thought 11-1 was being overly exuberant, but that is just me.
Frankly, I would be grudgingly okay with 9-3, ... but I need to be honest and say I still think 10-2 is possible (and it is what I thought we would do before the first game).
Why would you be okay with 9-3? You ask!
1) Because Elijah Herring was ill prepared for the game and they took advantage of his inexperience for the full first quarter. I was afraid of that and yep it happened.
2) Because the penalty calls in the Florida game were really bad and that makes a huge difference in my mind. I'm not calling it home cooking, but it was egregious. (South Carolina game was bad as well.)
3) We did not have Mays back guiding the O-line.
4) It was an away game and away games are harder. And there are a few more things, but I am going to keep those to my self because I do not want to bring them out into the light of day. (Don't ask.)
