Arian Foster article in ESPN the Magazine

Since when did S&C overcome genes as to how someone's physique looks? Training can only do so much. It's not like anybody can become Mr Universe no matter how much they train or what they put in their body. It all starts with what you're born with.

Anyone (without some debilitating problem) can train and build an impressive physique. Genes may make it easier for some, but it can be done by anybody. If Arian has the athleticism to make it as a starter in the SEC, much less the pros, his genes sure as hell aren't holding him back and definitely has no genetic excuse for being "doughy".

I disagree. Some incredible athletes are doughy no matter how much time they spend exercising and it won't go away unless they diet. An NFL player who suffers from being doughy won't diet because then they will never have the energy to perform. Think about Chuck Liddell. Dude trained like a maniac and ate cleanly but he was never going to have solid abs if he didn't eliminate carbs from his diet which he couldn't.

You think these NFL dudes are walking around with six packs because they are limiting their carb intake? Foster has nothing to do, ever, other than football and staying in shape. Any diet he so desires, accomplishing anything he so desires, designed by someone that does that stuff for a living, is well within reach.

It's because they are athletes, and most athletes have spectacular aesthetics. There is high correlation with athletic capability and lean muscularity. Not all athletes are genetically blessed this way. If you are not blessed in this fashion, the only way to get a nice stomach is through diet. I thought what I said made perfect sense, and I even cited a great example in Chuck Liddel. If Foster is one of these "doughy" athletes (which he's always seemed that way to me) he's not going to become a better athlete by getting a 6-pack. That's not a priority for him. He just wants speed and strength, and he's not going to get faster and stronger through carb-depleting, though that might be the only way for him to get a 6-pack.

It's not a priority for him, yet his doughy physique has prompted him to step up his training. OK.

Some people just can't comprehend that genetics are a huge role in physical appearance & athletic ability. Yes hard work pays off nobody denies that but while 1 guy is busting his ass there's another guy that is blessed & has to do virtually nothing. We all know a person that can eat whatever they want, drink whatever they want, & as much as they want & not gain a pound or ounce of fat. As for the NFL guys, if my only job was to play football & workout it would be easier to have a 6 pack or whatever.

The point has never been about appearance! Arian said his appearance was "doughy" as evidence that his workout regimen was not sufficient to stay at his best. I made the point that in my opinion, that was a bigger testament to his sorry training he received under Johnny Long. Baker, in his typical, "I need to post the opposite so people will think I'm smart" response, incorrectly stated (because he didn't read the article, therefore his statistically drawn conclusion is wrong) that his genes were more critical to his success than his workout. The fact that Arian didn't get drafted but now shows his ability is such that he should have been a first found pick, arguably top ten, proves that his training was insufficient at UT. He was always regarded as one of the hardest workers on the team, so you can't say he just was a slacker while he was here. Now he is trained by his brother with less training than Long, but a more successful business than Johnny's current D1 ripoff.
Genetics obviously play a part, but I guarantee that no one is in the NFL because of genetics minus hard work. Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and other athletes have even overcome genetics by steroids.

Do you remember Deion Sanders? I'm sure there's more guys that have made it in the NFL than just prime time based on pure natural ability just llike there's guys that have made it by busting their ass. My statement about genetics, primarily on appearance, was that you don't have to be ripped to be a great athlete or strong or fast.

Than you need to be arguing with baker. BTW, are you implying that Deion didn't workout?

I'm not implying Deion never worked out I'm saying his athletic ability was 99% god given or genetics whatever you prefer.

I wholeheartedly disagree that anyone has ever stepped foot on an NFL field (minus Janikowski) due to 99% ability. That's crazy!
