Arian Foster

I think the first time I saw them in person was an Ole Miss game in Knoxille. I don't know what year that was, so I'm not sure how old I was..

was it '89?

Could've been. I thought I was younger when I saw them. That would put me at 12. That could be right though. Jeff Francis was QBing right?

Arian is also a great example of how overrated or in this case underrated scouting reports can be.

Uh huh, and that is always the case. Scouting reports aren't perfect, college recruiters aren't perfect, and the NFL is not perfect. Evaluating talent is an inexact science at best.

Jeff Francis's last year was '88. Cobb was there that year, but Webb's freshman season was '89, and he got a UT record 294 yards against Ole Miss after Cobb was dismissed from the team prior to the Alabama game.

For the record, Chuck Webb is the best UT running back I have ever seen. Ever. Sad part is, he only had his freshman year, the Pigskin Classic against Colorado, and the Pacific game his sophomore year to show it.

You asked a question. I gave my opinion. Don't ask if you don't want opinions.

Yeah I remember the first time I saw "Cobb-Webb Connection" in a headline and thinking how cool that was.

I remember the game in which Webb tore his knee up in. I believe it was the Pacific game. I was there, and when it happened like we have seen so many times at Neyland that place got very very quiet.

Webb, Garner, Lewis, and Cobb were all better, IMO.

Chuck Webb is one of the best RBs I have ever seen...at any school...at any time.

The two best I ever saw:
Charlie Garner
Travis Stephens(big time yardage in EVERY big game)

Travis Stephens was the epitomy of a true Vol, he had more heart in his little finger than the yrs whole offensive team.

For old school's sake, I think Johnny Jones needs to be mentioned just for having the best Afro.

I will never forget the CobbWebb against Auburn in 89

Thank goodness for CobbWebb that day. We lined up the great Sterling Henton at QB and I think we threw 7 passes all day long.

Charlie Garner had the highest average per carry for a career. I think it was almost 6 yds/carry.

UT has been blessed with several "greats" at running back, no one's mentioned Travis Henry..."like trying to tackle a block of cheese"

Yeah, Travis had the ability to carry the ball in one arm and knock a defender on his “keester” with the other, all while at a full gallop.

Yep. Unfortunately, we haven't had good RB play since 2001. That's really hurt us more than people realize. And it makes our OL look bad too because our backs couldn't make anyone miss...changes down and distance...harder to protect...etc.

but if you want to talk about best backs at UT...well, Chuck Webb, Tony Thompson, and Charlie Garner are going to be tough to beat...

Good to see folks remember Tony Thompson. If I remember right, he didn't even get a chance to start 'til his senior year. Wound up having a fantastic season. Proof positive that a "pretty good" back truly can excel when the line plays well.

For you youngsters out there, I've got 2 words for you:

Stanley Morgan!!!

Absolutely without a question the best "all-around" back ever at Tennessee. You might have seen him play with the New England Patriots back when they wore red WHITE and blue...

I remember Stanley, he was a terrific WR as well. Back in the day of the “tear away jersey” it wasn’t unusual to see Stanley high stepping in the end zone with entire front and back of his jersey missing.
