he knew Pat Toomey was coming down the pike, and he knew that he had played all of his cards with the R party

just heard a specter comment. he said he is not going to have his 29 years of service hurt by the pennsylvania republicans. he said he did internal polling and he basically said he would not have won against toomey.

Spectre also claims that he isn't going to vote in lockstep with the dems.

just watch, he'll be the 60th vote when it comes to nationalizing health care.

About par for the course for Specter. Between the single bullet theory, invoking Scottish Law on the Clinton impeachment and constantly playing the middle, he's pretty made a career of being a pain in the ass.

I'm going to laugh the first time he conscientiously votes no on a cloture vote and Harry Reid goes nuts.

The Dems were giddy when Judd Gregg wanted to be Commerce Sec as well. Jeffords was another classic. Looney Zell Miller is another example of switchers not amounting to much. Hey if they trust him, more power to them. This move proves he's more about Arlen than any party. If Harry thinks he has his magic 60, he is smoking something.

Specter is notoriously erratic when it comes to voting with his party. If he voted with the Dems, even half the time, it would surprise the heck out of me.

If he had any integrity and conviction in his beliefs, he would have become an independent instead of demonstrating the fallacy in our two-party entrapment.

another thing, Specter is 79 and has survived two rounds with cancer. Shouldn't he just announce his retirement from public office?

He's a career politician. Meaning he will most likely die while in the Senate.

I thought his comments where he said he knew he wouldn't win the Republican primary in PA and he wasn't going to let Republicans in PA end his 29 year career in the Senate tells you everything you need to know about his motivations.

He isn't representing anyone but himself. I can't think of better evidence of the need for term limits.

I am listening to his press conference (or presser, to those of you who wear sunglasses indoors) and I am getting even more ticked off. He is acting like he is doing this great and noble thing and only serving his constituents, when he is only doing everything he can to avoid letting the majority of his constituents kick his butt out of office. The guy is revolting.

In all fairness, he wouldn't have won the Republican primary, due to the party going more to the hard right candidates at this point.

For the GOP right now, no seat is safe.

He says the party is moving further to the right, there is no evidence to support this what so ever. In fact all the evidence seems to support the opposite, the party has moved further to the left as a whole. He just happens to be one of the furthest left in the republican party, he pissed off his constituents and knows he was on the chopping block.

I see where some would say the party is going hard right, but that isn't totally correct. What you see happening is more of a response to the mismanagement in Congress of our public funds and those on the right are sick of it. They want new blood to represent them, men and women who are as sick of insane spending as they are, these people aren't any further to the right then they were 15 to 20 years ago, our government has moved further to the left and the country needs new republican blood to keep spending in check.

You know, I could really see a 3rd national party being able to challenge in some general elections in 2010. If the Libertarians can manage to have some good donors and some good candidates, they could be able to put a few members in Congress.

The best description of him I ever heard was from a fellow senator a few years ago; "Arlen Spector is a liar and the truth isn't in him."

He knows he has strong opposition in the Republican primary, which he can't win and hopes to ride in on the coat tails of the Democrats.

I hope it backfires.
