IMO ypg still plays a factor because there have been other teams with up tempo offenses that don't give up the amount we do.

We were also 71st in explosive plays allowed.
Ypg isn’t a big deal to me if we are at the top of the list in those other categories I mentioned. I don’t care if you have 500 yards if you only score 17 points. Now explosive plays I do agree we need to get down into the top 20 bc I believe explosive plays are only counted as tds ?? Like I said idc if they hit a 70 yard pass if it leads to us getting a turnover or forcing a field goal. If our offense is as good as we think it’s gonna be then no team is gonna beat us with field goals.

Explosive plays are passes over 20 yards and runs over 15 I believe. We need to be able to get off the field within about 5 plays. If we keep letting them sustain drives it will wear out the defense, especially with how fast our offense operates. Not to mention, it puts pressure on our offense to be perfect.

If your defense is top 10 in ppg then it doesn’t matter what the ypg is gonna be. Our offense is goin to put our defense on the field a lot I mean a lot . So that’s why I’m not concerned about ypg, bc of the style of our offense our defense is going to be tired bc they’re on the field close to 100 plays.

@Mccage I don't disagree with you that our OL was good most of the season. They were not good against UGAly, which was the second question ITT that I was responding to.

Some good takes here.
I expect the secondary to be improved.
If they improved to SEC-average, that would be a major factor for success.

The defense isn't on the field 100 plays unless they're not getting off the field. Ypg isn't everything but it's an indicator. We don't give up a lot of rushing yds. We do give up a lot of passing yards. Our secondary has also been bad. There is a correlation.

I never said the secondary was good, but ypg goes out the window with our offense. Ppg, red zone defense, and third down defense is the true indicator of a good defense. Who cares if the other team has 400 yards if they can’t score tds. If you don’t understand that then I’m done having this conversation bc you’re not listening to the facts.

They are scoring TDs and yardage still matters because it's unnecessary wear and tear on the defense and it takes possessions away from the offense, all simply because we can't get off the field and have to go 8 or 9 plays every defensive drive when teams with good defenses and good 3rd down defense who limit explosive plays get off the field in 3 to 6 plays more often than not. As I've said, yardage is an indicator. I'd rather keep them out of the red zone more often than not. It all adds up to a bigger picture. If you want to act like certain aspects don't matter, have at it.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ you’re never going to get this defense in the top 25 in ypg with our style of offense. If you wanna act like winning the lottery is a real possibility too, have at it.

You do know the whole point of this offense is to go as fast as you can?? Go back and look at our average top compared to the other team.. no matter what this defense will be on the field for a long time.

Yeah and it makes a big difference to fatigue level when you're out there for an 8 minute drive and then our offense scores quick vs a 4 min drive. It adds up. Not a hard concept.

This is very obvious so maybe that is why it is not being discussed. You need key stops on 3rd down and against Georgia and South Carolina that didn't seem like it happened at all. My memory is telling me we hardly got any stops. We couldn't get their QB on the ground enough in scramble situations and then the DBs would not hold up. We need DBs that can hold up for longer.. difficult ask and a bit better scheme to get the QB down in scramble situations.

Secondary is going to take years to actually fix. Heup has more to do on the recruiting front
I said this yesterday in the recruiting forum. I like Heup a lot, and I know people dont want to hear this, but ranking outside the top 10 in recruiting in the SEC isnt going to cut it long-term if we really want to seriously compete for championships. Not trying to be critical but thats just the reality. We're certainly in a better place now than 3-4 years ago but at some point we have to take that next step and the only way to get there is in recruiting.

Saw these stats in a Georgia video. The guy's analysis with video cuts seemed right to me. Link is below if you want to get your own take on it.

The host's style is kinda slow and pedantic [insert Georgia joke here]. I'd suggest skip ahead to the 01:50 mark and up the speed to 1.25, then when he's showing cuts, drop the speed to .75.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying for a long time on how we beat UGA. We have to run the ball effectively and be physical . We have to get them to bring up a safety and then we can hit them over the top.
