athiests and agnostics know more about religion than churchgoers

Most people who have thoughtfully approached their decisions know more than those who simply inherited their parents' religion. Not surprising at all.

This. I don't think I've ever met someone who was born an atheist.

It's not surprising that blind faithers couldn't tell you much about what they claim to believe.

Always consider the source, PEW would never try to manipulate public opinion.

Oh wait, influencing public opinion is one of their stated goals.

My bad.

I'm on pins and needles waiting for them to do their poll on mosque goers.

I am sure religious people know mire about their OWN religion than the average atheist.

I am disappointed this little nugget wasn't emphasized though -

For comparison purposes, the survey also asked some questions about general knowledge, which yielded the scariest finding: 4% of Americans believe that Stephen King, not Herman Melville, wrote "Moby Dick."

that's what I assumed but the article suggests otherwise

as has been stated - this is not surprising given that atheists/agnostics arrive there after weighing the options.

the article doesn't note the size of the knowledge gap.

How many people do you know that are X because their parents were X? Not because they searched and decided on X. Subtract from that the number of those people that aren't devout followers of their religion, just followers on paper. Before I left the church, I was astounded at the number of people that didn't have a clue about what our faith believed.

This poll is not surprising. The percentage of people that go to church because their parents did/do is greater than those that find it on their own. Couple that with the extraordinarily hard task of proving it to be inaccurate, and you see the results. There are far more people that would prefer to see the Bible tarnished than would prefer to follow and truly understand its teachings.

I hope my child is 'x' because I'm 'x'. At least they are in the doors. What they do with it is up to them. The timing of it is not up to us.

Just out of curiosity, what evidence have you seen of this from this site?

that was mostly a trolling statement, but I do find it humerous when people here blast the non believers here by saying they clearly don't understand the religion or if they went to their church or whatever they'd be saved and would change their mind.

Religion is on its way out anyway. Europe is largely atheist/agnostic now. Buddhism and Hinduism are more of a belief system than a religion. Islam has over a billion adherents but you can't find two that believe equally. With practicing Christians dwindling daily, Muslims will probably wipe out each other eventually.

Living in the South is the only place where church is still an intricate part of most in the community. Southern Baptists still use the bible in worship and read it at home, from my observation, but I can't find one that can readily prove their primary beliefs directly from the bible. The rest of protestants have turned more into social clubs than religions.

That's just my personal observations as a whole, I'm sure there are some exceptions.
