Just how does the world's largest economy with the most powerful military consistently get screwed in trade deal after trade deal? It boggles my mind.

Because the guys making the trade deals are making deals.

And by deals, I mean millions on the side.

Good answer. We are a nation of individuals now rather than a united people. The 'what can I get out of it' mindset.

Edit: I am particularly describing those that have been elected to serve the people rather than themselves.

Sadly, I would guess th only group that was ever in America that actually acted as a group (live or die together) was the Mayflower and maybe on an optimistic view up to the 13 colonies. I truly believe after that leaders began taking care of their sect of local people or friends. The only difference I think that takes place today is the scope in which their greed and decisions makes an impact on society.

Every time I hear stories like the GE tax one, I think of that bit in O Brother Where Art Thou with the governor yelling "is you or is you ain't my constituency?!"

I was actually suprised by that movie. I thought it was going to be a total POS and when I sat down with my dad and he had it on and I started watching it I was impressed. Very good movie. Worth owning.

GE's CEO has a cozy relationship with Obama, and their skirting of taxes garners little attention. Exxon/Mobil, in one year, paid more in business taxes than 50% of all US taxpayers combined and because they're an oil company, they're evil cronies of the Bush family empire.

A Fair Tax, based on consumption, not income, would eliminate all this garbage.

None of Exxon's taxes went to the US. It's in the same boat as GE.

In Pictures: What The 25 Top U.S. Companies Pay In Taxes - No. 2: ExxonMobil - Forbes.com

I feel like this gets mentioned in every thread.

Given what GE has done, after loopholes I bet we have some of the lowest in the world.

We do. It's preposterous. Bush the Lesser even tried to repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax.

And, as we have shown in another thread, taxing corporations is one of the most efficient ways of raising revenue and keeping the economy humming and addressing iniquity.
