Attrition Rates updated

That didn’t really answer the question. How will that level the playing field (granted I don’t actually see a level playing field as a desirable outcome)?

It seems the same schools winning at recruiting will also get the best players in the portal.

the elite teams, recently elite, are very selective in using the portal. They certainly can be as they have a roster of high rated players.

For example from the portal:

Georgia has taken 2 players this cycle, WRs. They only took 1 player in 2022, 5 in 2021 and 4 in 2020.

Alabama has taken 1 this cycle a TE. 5 in 2022, 4 in 2021 and 2 in 2020.

Ohio St has taken 1 this cycle, a Kicker. 3 in 2022, 2 in 2021 and 2 in 2020.

Now they might take more as there is still a long way to go in this cycle. But they are selective in what they take.

Agreed. But I don’t see that as an equalizer

Just an FYI, Georgia had 12 players leave after the 2021 season in the portal. So they lose players but they are consistently replacing them with equal or better players.
Yes and despite what Kirby mouths, they take transfers as well. He is such a douche bag!

Because there’s no 25 cap and the transfer portal now exists, attrition is no longer a negative. A lot of attrition is going to be from players asked to move on so teams can bring in more players

I don't believe the portal is an equalizer, at this point anyway. The portal still leans more heavily to players getting into it because they have issues where they are. They are unhappy for some reason and looking to leave. I believe that is why Heuple is so selective and investigative of players. He is more concerned about fit within the program than filling spots..

Interesting. One thing that stands out is that FL and LSU, despite numerous coaching changes, manage to hold onto to players at a higher percentage than the rest of the conference.
I haven't looked at any data, but my first guess would be that such a high percentage of their players are from FL and LA respectively, so they have a more of a connection to their schools than just the coaches.

My thoughts, and they might be only mine, is that the portal "could be, or is" an additional avenue for lesser teams who continually lose the recruitment wars of high school players, to gather some less known players w experience
Yes, it allows them to get some different and possibly better players but It seems to me the teams with the best rosters get the best from the portal so the gap just gets wider.
